This wasn't just any random piece of land, but a mountain fondly christened as "St. Mary's Mountain" by the Catholic settlers.
Out of his indomitable spirit, came the first structure of Mount St. Mary's, a log cabin erected by dedicated, faithful parishioners in the year 1805. This cabin served as Father DuBois' quaint, humble dwelling. Critically, alongside this cabin, the cornerstone for Saint-Mary's-on-the-Hill church was laid and completed in 1807.
In just one year later, 1808 marked a significant transformation. The Society of St. Sulpice, a French clerical organisation, closed Pigeon Hill, their preparatory seminary in Pennsylvania. What followed was an influx of seminarians moving to Emmitsburg. As a result, Mount St. Mary's took its baby steps into becoming an educational institution.
