History Emory and Henry College

Have you ever thought about studying in a place that is steeped in history and tradition, yet dynamic and evolving? If so, let me take you on a historical journey of Emory & Henry College. A tale that takes us back when this institution was merely an idea in the minds of four men.

In the 1830s, these visionaries - a Methodist minister named Creed Fulton, Colonel William Byars, a Methodist farmer Tobias Smyth, and Alexander Findlay, a determined Methodist businessman - moulded their dedication towards vital faith and civic engagement into an educational structure. The college was named after John Emory, a revered Methodist bishop, and Patrick Henry, Virginia's first governor - an American patriot. Meanwhile, the theory doesn't entirely exclude that the name could also pay tribute to Henry's sister, Elizabeth Henry Campbell Russell.

The first signs of this college began to appear on the horizon on 30th September 1836, a day when the foundation for Wiley Hall was set. By spring 1838, the institution started its classes under its first president, Charles Collins, and was running with 60 lively students, each committed to shaping a better future.

Emory & Henry's journey, however, wasn't always plain sailing. In 1861, only a few decades after its establishment, the winds of the Civil War caused the institution to temporarily close its gates. By 1862, the grounds of the college were taken over by the Confederate States of America and transformed into a hospital. It served in this capacity until the end of the war in 1865.

During this tumultuous time, the campus became an unlikely battlefield during the Battle of Saltville. Its halls echoed with the grim tales of war, such as Lieutenant Smith's murder by Champ Ferguson in October 1864. Yet, as we know, every storm passes, and with the end of the war, Emory & Henry reopened its doors.

In 1918, the tides of change carried Emory & Henry again along its course when it merged with the Martha Washington College. This Methodist-affiliated school for women located in Abingdon, Virginia, smoothly integrated into Emory & Henry's administrative operations. As part of the merger, Martha Washington's 8-acre campus, and its debts too, transferred to Emory & Henry.

However, things didn't quite work out as planned. Despite Emory & Henry's best efforts to run Martha Washington College as a co-ordinate women's college, the setup only survived a decade. It finally closed down completely in 1931.

World War II once again beckoned Emory & Henry to play its part on the national stage. It was one of 131 colleges in the US that offered students a chance to earn a Navy commission through the V-12 Navy College Training Program.

Today, Emory & Henry vibrantly expresses its diversity, with a community boasting 1,082 spirited undergraduate students and 273 ambitious graduate scholars. An enthusiastic faculty of 97 full-time professors fuels this academic excellence. This illustrious institute stands not merely as a college, but as a testament to perseverance, dedication, and historical significance. So, wouldn't you want to be a part of this dynamic journey, studying in an environment rich with history, culture, and opportunities? Your dreams are possible at Emory & Henry College.
