As promised Kansas by its constitution became a state in 1861, and the need for a state university was seeded. Between 1861 and 1863, Kansas pursued a state university in three major cities; Lawrence, Manhattan, and Emporia. However, Manhattan was chosen because it had been specified as a land-grant college in the Morrill Land-Grant Act of 1862. This allowed the evolution of Kansas State University, while Lawrence and Emporia were left contesting for the state university.
The generosity of Amos Adams Lawrence, who donated $10,000 and 40 acres of land to Lawrence, tilted the Kansas Legislature’s verdict in favor of Lawrence despite Emporia's strong contention. Emporia didn't remain dejected for long, as a few days later, on March 7, 1863, the Kansas State Normal School was approved by the legislature, a cradle that would later become Emporia State University.
Notably, despite its founding in 1863, the first classes weren’t held until February 15, 1865. Nevertheless, two women, Mary Jane Watson and Ellen Plumb, confidently graduated two and a half years later as the first class from the institution, marking the birth of an educational legacy.
Fast forward to 1876, the Kansas Legislature's "Miscellaneous appropriation bill of 1876" led to closures in Leavenworth Normal and Concordia Normal. So, all the state funds could be diverted to boost Emporia. Consequently, Emporia's early 20th-century expansion saw the establishment of satellite campuses in Pittsburg and Hays. Today, these have transformed into individual institutions, namely Fort Hays State University and Pittsburg State University.
As the 1920s came around, the university adapted to the changing educational arena and became the Kansas State Teachers College in February 1923. Soon, fifty years later in July 1974, it transitioned into Emporia Kansas State College. Finally, on April 21, 1977, Emporia State College earned its final and current designation, Emporia State University.
Navigating through the 21st century, Dr. Michael Shonrock had the privilege of serving Emporia State University as its 16th president starting from January 3, 2012. However, by the spring of 2015, Shonrock stepped down, making way for Allison Garrett, the current president of Emporia State University, who started on January 4, 2016.
Fast forward to 2022, with no prior experience in higher education yet an executive at Koch Industries, Ken Hush took the helm at Emporia State University. Hush's tenure was marked shortly by the controversial firing of more than dozen faculty members, an act that has inspired wide scrutiny.
Exposing more controversy, six weeks following faculty layoffs, a confidential sum of $137,741 was discovered to be awarded to a handful of faculty as performance bonuses. The largest of these payments amounting to $3,887 was discovered going to an associate professor who also served as the faculty senate president.
