Borgia Egan, the first president, and her associates had received their charter by October 5, 1928.
This initiative eventually led to the creation of Mercyhurst Preparatory School in 1963, a separate entity behind the university. Transitioning times led to a significant decision on February 3, 1969, when the governing board of trustees elected to open the doors to men, transforming Mercyhurst into a co-educational institution.

The university purchased the century-old Redemptorist Seminary in North East, converted it into a satellite campus, and started offering associate degrees and one-year certificates.
