Let’s roll back the curtains now; shall we? There we see Judge Matthew Deady, quite the chap he was, planting seeds for what was soon to become Oregon's flagship university. Roping in 177 students and five faculty members, Deady opened the doors of learning on Oct 16, 1876. Can you believe, it all started in just one little building!
Fast-forward to 1881 and you can spot Mary Spiller Reed. She was a firecracker, the first female faculty member. A strong and dynamic woman, Mary was appointed the school's first librarian, a role she rocked until 1908. Rising to popularity, the university understood gender has nothing to do with one's ability to impart knowledge.
