History Northwestern University

Imagine it's May 31, 1850. Nine savvy Chicago businessmen, Methodist leaders, and sharp attorneys gather together, their hearts set on a grand idea - to build a university that would serve the Northwest Territory, which existed from 1787 to 1803. The seeds of Northwestern University were sown at that historic meeting.

Fast forward to January 28, 1851. The Illinois General Assembly graced the trustees of Northwestern University with a charter, making it the first chartered university in Illinois. The nine trailblazing founders, all Methodists, knelt in prayer before embarking on their organizational meeting. Their unwavering commitment to inclusivity echoed in their decision to have a non-sectarian admissions policy.

In 1853, a visionary named John Evans, whose name graces the city of Evanston, procured a stretch of 379 acres of land along the shimmering Lake Michigan. Philo Judson, another founding forefather, developed these vast playground into what we know today as Evanston, Illinois. The doors of the first university building named Old College were opened for knowledge seekers on November 5, 1855.

Northwestern created an unique fund-raising strategy by selling "perpetual scholarships" at $100 each, providing its buyers and their heirs with the priceless gift of education. A mirror of enduring architecture, University Hall was built in 1869 from the same Joliet limestone that gives the iconic Chicago Water Tower its unique character.

A significant bond was made when Northwestern and the Evanston College for Ladies merged in 1873. The then named dean of women Frances Willard, later recognized as a women's rights advocate and co-founder of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU), began influencing the school. By 1882, Northwestern had their first gallant intercollegiate football team in action and also associated with existing law, medicine, and dentistry schools in Chicago.

The turn of the century saw Northwestern University bloom into the third-largest university in the United States. It flourished under the presidency of Walter Dill Scott between 1920 to 1939 to develop an integrated campus in Chicago. This era also established the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC), with Northwestern being one of the first six universities in the U.S to do so.

Times of hardships during the Great Depression between 1929 to 1941 affected the university's financial health, cutting its yearly income by 25 percent. The university managed to stay afloat due to several financial sacrifices and ultimately received a generous donation of $6 million from the Deering family, reviving its budget.

With World War II on the horizon, Northwestern underwent a transformation. Despite regular enrollments dropping significantly, the university kick-started vibrant, intensive programs that trained beyond 50,000 military personnel, including a future president of the U.S, John F. Kennedy. This comprehensive program gave Northwestern the catchy nickname of "Annapolis of the Midwest." Over the last 15 years, Northwestern established multiple research and collaboration projects, ensuring its place as a front-runner in the field of education.

The university witnessed expansive growth in the 1990s and 2000s with increased number and quality of undergraduate applicants, faculty expansion, and robust athletic advancements. Northwestern made headlines in 1999 when student journalists exonerated death-row inmate Anthony Porter, creating a landscape where academics and societal reforms converged.

The 2010s were an era of infrastructural growth with a new music center, a revamped business school building, and a $270 million athletic complex seeing the light of day. Former President Barack Obama gave an influential economics speech at Northwestern in 2014, and the Dutch royal couple, Queen Máxima and King Willem-Alexander paid a visit in 2015 to announce research alliances between Northwestern and Dutch institutions.

And as we arrive in the year 2021, the waves of history have brought with them a sizeable contribution. The Ryan Family made history by donating an additional $480 million to Northwestern, marking it as the largest donation the university has ever received. This generous contribution is intended for research at the Kellogg School of Management and Feinberg School of Medicine, as well as for the renovation of Ryan Field. Hence, Northwestern University's story continues to unfold, laden with constant quest for knowledge and innovation; a testament to its founders' vision.
