In the southeastern part of Indiana, amidst quaint locales, our story begins in 1854. Here, in a modest town called Moores Hill, John Moore had a vision. His dream was to build an institution of learning which he did - the Moores Hill Male and Female Collegiate Institute.
Picture this - it's December 1, 1856, and Moores Hill's very first college building, Moore Hall, just got completed. But, can you guess? The inaugural class wasn't waiting for the fresh paint to dry! They started their academic pursuits in the unfinished building as early as September 9.
The journey wasn't always smooth sailing though. Financial struggles hit the institution during its tenure in Moores Hill. Adding insult to injury, came the devastating fire in 1915 that reduced Moore Hall to ashes. But did that stop them? Not at all! The resilient institution shifted gears and continued its operations in a second building, Carnegie Hall, till its big relocation. The abandoned Moores Hill campus was then reused for an elementary and high school. And as a testament to its past, Carnegie Hall still stands high and proud today as a museum.
Now, let's rewind to March 21, 1917. On this day, George S. Clifford made a compelling case before the Indiana Conference of the Methodist Church. His agenda? To move the college to Evansville, Indiana. Showcasing a striking map that underlined the dearth of colleges in Evansville, George got everyone thinking. The icing on the cake? Well, the city of Evansville pooled in a hefty amount of $514,000 to welcome the college.
And thus, in 1919, the college packed its bags and moved to Evansville, adopting a new name – Evansville College. For some time, they operated in makeshift quarters downtown until Administration Hall (now fondly known as Olmsted Hall) was completed in 1922. Fun fact – Olmsted Hall is the only pre-World War II building to have survived the changing times on the campus.
As we move into the period post World-War II up until 1960, we see a significant expansion of Evansville College. From enduring the throes of the Great Depression with an enrolment of around 400 to a stunning leap to 1,500 by 1946 – what a journey! And the growth didn't stop there. The campus soon saw the addition of the Science and Engineering Building and the Alumni Memorial Union. In 1957, the Clifford Memorial Library came into existence in all its grandeur. The next decade witnessed the construction of five residence halls, a fitness center, dining hall, and an art building.
1967. A landmark year for Evansville College. With the approval of the Indiana State General Assembly, it underwent a monumental transformation. Evansville College was rechristened as the University of Evansville. In the same year, a shining beacon of culture and arts was brought to life with the completion of Hyde Hall, housing the renowned Shanklin Theater.
Let's fast forward to 2010. The University of Evansville celebrated an early milestone in its endowment campaign, raising an impressive $80 million, following a successful rally of an additional $60 million five years prior.
Our timeline brings us to July 1, 2018. Marking a new era for the University of Evansville, Christopher M. Pietruszkiewicz stepped in as the 24th president. It's today shaping the minds of countless students, carrying forward the legacy of its rich and resilient history.
