In the early 1940s, a visionary man named James H. Dolan, who held a significant post in the New England Province of the Society of Jesus, had a dream. He wanted to establish a Jesuit high school and college in Connecticut's southwestern region. It's 1941, and Dolan has just received the green light from Bishop Maurice F. McAuliffe of the Hartford Archdiocese.
Now, let's fast forward a year to 1942. Dolan's vision is starting to take shape. He acquires two adjoining estates – the standout properties of the Brewster Jennings and Walter Lashar families. Here's where Fairfield University truly comes to life, marking its place as the 26th Jesuit college/university in America.
With the land sealed, Dolan turns to the appointment of the university's first president, John J. McEleney. He is also entrusted with the role of Vicar of the Fairfield College Preparatory School. The very next year saw Dolan himself taking up the presidential mantle. It was during his time in 1945, that the State of Connecticut officially authorized Fairfield University to grant degrees.
We shift to 1947, and Fairfield has now leaped into the world of higher education, welcoming its first class of 303 lucky male students. The state gives its stamp of approval to the College of Arts and Sciences in 1949, which launches its first batch of summer undergraduate courses soon after.
In a momentous turn in 1970, Fairfield University threw open its doors to its first undergraduate class of women, proudly embracing co-education, and a new School of Nursing was born.
Flash forward just a year to 1971, where Fairfield University and three other Connecticut-based religious institutions were in the limelight. A major Supreme Court case, Tilton vs. Richardson, questioned their ability to procure federal construction grants under the Higher Education Facilities Act of 1963. In the end, though, Fairfield emerged victorious on June 28, 1971, ensuring substantial federal funding for the Nyselius Library and Bannow Science Center.
Enter 1978 and the School of Business, today known as the Dolan School of Business, finds its feet and starts offering a Master of Science in Financial Management.
The year 1979 brought a new leader, Aloysius P. Kelley, who held the reins as Fairfield's president for a record of 25 years. Under Kelley's stewardship, the university blossomed into a vibrant campus teeming with new buildings, innovative degree programs, and an enviable endowment that grew from under $2 million in 1979 to a whopping $131 million by 2003.
The universality experienced significant milestones under Kelley's leadership - acquiring the Bridgeport Engineering Institute in 1994 that led to the establishment of the Fairfield's School of Engineering and gaining a prestigious membership into Phi Beta Kappa in 1995.
The year 2004 set the stage for Jeffrey P. von Arx, who introduced capital campaign, "Our Promise: The Campaign for Fairfield University," which raised a mind-boggling $137.9 million. This funding led to the creation of seven new buildings and four academic chairs, and bolstering the university's endowment. In 2006, Fairfield University acknowledged Kelley's long-standing contributions by opening the Aloysius P. Kelley. S.J. Center.
At the close of 2016, after 12 years at the helm, von Arx decided to step down. The lengthy search for a worthy successor ended with the appointment of Mark R. Nemec in July 2017, who is the first lay president in Fairfield University's history. As we draw closer to the present day, we are reminded of where Fairfield began and how, under the careful leadership of these visionaries, it has turned into the academic powerhouse it is today.
