Picture this. It's 1865, on a sunny day in a little city in the heart of West Virginia, USA. Fairmont. John N. Boyd, a pioneering scholar, laid the cornerstone of the first private normal school for grooming teachers. This institution grew like a mustard seed to what we now proudly call Fairmont State University.
Fast forward to February 27, 1867. The state took over the reins from the Regents of West Virginia Normal School, thereby making Fairmont State University an extension of Marshall College State Normal School. Meanwhile, an imposing brick edifice bloomed at the juncture of Adams and Quincy streets.
Throughout 1867 and 1892, this esteemed educational institution garnered many monikers. It oscillated being Fairmont Normal School, Fairmont Branch of West Virginia Normal School, Branch of West Virginia Normal School at Fairmont, Branch of West Virginia State Normal School of Marshall College, but it was often addressed as Fairmont State Normal School (FSNS). Eventually, by 1892, we simply dropped "branch" from our identity.
Then in 1893, a significant change set in. We decided it was time to move into a new grounds. Until 1917 this campus was at the crossroads of Second Street and Fairmont Avenue. We then resettled to our present-day abode, on a picturesque hill overlooking Locust Avenue.
Our current address, better known as Hardway Hall, acquired its title from none other than our former president – Wendell G. Hardway. Hardway Hall, or as it was previously named, Fairmont Normal School Administration Building, earned its place on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994, a truly proud moment for us! What's more interesting is, it still preserves the old world charm, standing tall as a marvelous blend of history and modernity.
The year 1923 marked a new dawn. We stepped into the arena of higher learning by offering our first four-year bachelor's degree program in education. We were now not just a school, but a college, a significant milestone indeed!
1931 saw yet another name modification; we went from being Fairmont State Normal School to Fairmont State Teachers College. In 1943, another decade, another pivotal shift – we became Fairmont State College.
The final transformation happened on April 7, 2004, evolving from a college to a full-fledged university. A turning point that scripted a glorious chapter in the history, shaping the identity we bear today, as Fairmont State University.
