On a momentous day in March, precisely on the 8th in 1890, a signature on a bill heralded the birth of North Dakota Agricultural College (NDAC). This significant event occurred just a year after North Dakota was recognized as a state and was the fruition of a seven-year-old plan to initiate an agro-based college in the northern Dakota Territory. NDAC was meant to serve a special purpose – it was to be North Dakota's land-grant institution.
A man named Horace E. Stockbridge gained the distinction of becoming the first ever president of NDAC as of October 15, 1890, with a board of trustees in place to oversee the college. The initial classes unfolded in the backdrop of six classrooms, not within the campus, but borrowed from Fargo College. It took little over a year for the maiden batch of students to step into these classrooms, on September 8, 1891, to be precise.
An important milestone in NDAC's journey was the completion of the College Hall (known reverently as Old Main) in 1892 – it was the college's first on-campus edifice. Move forward in time to 1908, and the college had its own alma mater, "The Yellow and The Green". With its official colors chosen as Yellow and Green just a year later, the institution was carving out a unique identity.
Fast forward to 2015, an intriguing adjustment was made to the alma mater - only the first verse would be acknowledged by the university from then onward, due to certain ethnic references tucked away in the third stanza.
The college grew steadily, evolving and broadening its academic offerings. Finally, on November 8, 1960, a decisive referendum renamed NDAC as North Dakota State University (NDSU), reflecting the widening academic horizons of this growing institution.
Preserving the historical significance of the university, a generous 36-acre piece of land, home to twelve historical structures were prominently featured on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986 as the North Dakota State University District.
Witnessing a robust phase of expansion post the dawn of the 21st century, NDSU grew beyond its first 10,000 students in the fall of 2000, swelling up to 14,189 by 2009, and maintaining a strength of 13,650 in 2018. This growth spurred improvements in research, athletics, and campus facilities.
The university added a number of boundaries to its academic portfolio between 2000 and 2007, introducing several new undergraduate degree and thirty-one postgraduate degree programs. It also rejuvenated its facilities, building and renovating legacies like the Wallman Wellness Center, Memorial Union, and the College of Business. Additionally, in 2004, NDSU took a crucial step for the school's sports programs, moving all athletics to Division I.
Known for constantly evolving, NDSU continued its stride forward into the future. In 2023, its president Dean Cook announced plans to consolidate two colleges out of seven into five in a bid to save $7.6 million. This led to the discontinuation of some majors due to exorbitant costs and dwindling enrollment. However, NDSU remains undeterred, planning to introduce new majors to cater to the future workforce needs. Fundamentally, the evolution story of North Dakota State University is an unending saga, a testament to its relentless pursuit of excellence and growth.
