Our story begins on July 2, 1862, beautiful day, when you know, Lincoln decided to pump some life into the education system of America. That’s right, President Abraham Lincoln! He signs this law called the Morrill Land Grant Act. Basically, this snazzy legislation led to the creation of universities across various states that would focus on agriculture, mechanic arts, and military tactics. Picture it, offering education to ordinary folks, not just those born with silver spoons! Now, isn’t that an innovative thought?
8 years roll by and the folks of Maine decide to jump on the bandwagon. On February 24, 1871, the Maine State Legislature couldn’t keep its hands to itself and had to pass a law. They established a school that we today call the University of Maine (UMaine). Started off as the Maine College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, located in Orono. Kinda neat, isn't it?
Abbot Morrill was chosen to serve as the University’s first president in 1868. But hey, having a President around wasn’t enough to open the college doors. The place was still under construction and lacked the necessary funds. So, while Abbot dreamt about the future generation of learned heads, he had to patiently wait till 1868 for everything to fall into place.
Now, let me tell you something mind-boggling, our dear UMaine was a rebel right from the birth. UMaine was the only land grant institution that didn’t let that Morrill Land Grant Act dictate it to be a full-blown university.
When the inaugural class kicked off in September 1868, you won't believe this, but there were only 12 students and 2 faculty members! Talk about an intimate setting for education! Our beloved Abbot Morrill, though was the head honcho, he embraced a cute nickname, "Prex". The campus wasn’t all that bad either. Two Italianate buildings, just perfect for a cozy and tight-knit academic community.
UMaine's engineering department shoots to fame in 1883. With an iconic steam engine called "The Mary Reed", successfully alerting Maine's industrial community about its 'steady and menacing' academic growth.
Fast forward to 1897, the University gets a new title, embracing its identity as “The University of Maine.” Around this time, the campus began to expand, adding more students and faculty. For the folks here it was, and still is, all about learning and pushing boundaries of knowledge.
UMaine has many "firsts" under its belt and added another feather to its cap by welcoming women in 1873. That’s right, ladies first! With six ladies stepping into what was traditionally ‘men's territory,’ UMaine became the first New England land grant university to open its doors to women. Pretty cool, hey?
As years passed, UMaine continued to grow, like a kid fuelled by spinach. It strengthened its foundation with top-notch research facilities and a robust framework for graduate studies in 1923. Imagine, the little university that started with just 12 students and 2 faculty members was now a full-blown educational giant.
Today, UMaine is big, not just in the size but in reputation. With over 100 majors offered and more than 11,000 students from around the world, it’s got a global appeal, just like Bollywood! This institution's legacy of over 100 years really makes it a fantastic place to invest your time. C'mon aspiring minds and curious hearts, it’s time to make your own history at UMaine!
