Back in 1839, a vision took birth in the form of the Farmville Female Seminary Association led by Solomon Lea, an esteemed Methodist minister with a background in teaching at Randolph-Macon College. The school found its strength under his guidance. However, with his departure to helm the Greensboro Female Seminary, the school saw a fair share of presidents bringing distinct enhancements with each tenure.
Like many female seminaries in the South during the Reconstruction phase, the institution, known then as Farmville Female College, battled financial turbulence. The struggles post-Civil War were pretty evident and many seminaries had to close their doors. But, on June 5, 1875, Farmville College resurrected with a fresh charter and a renewed spirit under Rev. Paul Whitehead from the neighboring Nelson County, Virginia, pushing the enrollment to 100 students in 1876.
Fast forward to March 1884. The school was reborn, this time as the State Female Normal School, a brilliant innovation of Dr. William Henry Ruffner, the pioneering Virginia State Superintendent of Instruction. Offering a revolutionary model for teacher preparation, the State Female Normal School gained reputable standing among numerous other normal schools in the state.
The turn of the 20th century in 1902 ushered leadership in the form of Joseph L. Jarman who served as the president for an enduring period of 44 years. From restructuring the architecture of the physical campus by infusing a row of colonnaded Jeffersonian brick buildings, to the introduction of the Honor Code which stands even today, he shaped the institution into a respectable teacher preparatory college notwithstanding several name changes over the years.
Under Jarman's presidency, the college purchased the nearby Longwood House in 1928, which eventually lent its name to the institution. Longwood College, with its keen focus on teacher preparation, further extended its academic degrees in 1954 with the authorization to issue graduate diplomas leading to rapid expansion of the campus in subsequent years.
The conversation around co-education sparked in 1964, but it took another decade for Longwood to open its doors to male students. And, in 1976, the university embraced complete co-education. Then, in 1981, the college witnessed a momentous event with Dr. Janet Greenwood taking the helm as the first woman president in Longwood's modern history.
Longwood experienced a significant augmentation under Dr. William F. Dorrill's presidency between 1988 - 96. His contributions improved Longwood's international student community and diversified study-abroad opportunities through collaborations with global educational institutions.
In a dramatic episode that marked Longwood's recent history, The Great Fire of 2001 severely damaged The Rotunda building which was under renovation. The fire didn't cause any injuries but necessitated major rebuilding efforts. Just a year later, on April 2, 2002, Longwood was granted university status by Virginia Governor Mark Warner, enabling the institution to broaden its undergraduate and graduate programs.
The 21st century witnessed the inauguration of many state-of-the-art facilities such as the John H. and Karen Chichester Science Center in 2005, the Health and Fitness Center in 2007, and the Center for Communication Studies and Theater in 2009. Respect for former presidents was demonstrated when three key buildings were named after them in 2004.
Longwood’s academic profile gained prominence after transitioning to a university, with new offerings in diverse fields like nursing, environmental science, athletic training, animation, cybersecurity, among others.
In continuation of this marked legacy, W. Taylor Reveley IV assumed the position of the University's 26th president on March 23, 2013, with his lineage boasting of presidents from other reputed colleges. Longwood's highlight moment was when it got selected to host the 2016 United States vice-presidential debate on October 4, 2016.
