Picture this. The year is 1854, and the wild expanse of Fayette, Iowa is being tamed by hardy pioneers. Among them is Elizabeth Alexander, a visionary whose dream of a college in this frontier land would soon become a reality. It was her strong will that persuaded her husband, Robert, to contribute a stupendous $10,000, an amount unimaginable for the era, to jumpstart her vision. To compound on this, their son-in-law, Samuel Robertson, chipped in with not just $5,000 but also a generous tract of land measuring 10 acres. This marked the birth of what would become the renowned Upper Iowa University, with the inaugural Board of Trustees meeting held in 1856, and classes kicking off on the chilly morning of January 7, 1857.
Can you imagine your ancestors studying in an institution cozying up to the Methodist Church? Well, until 1928, Upper Iowa University was closely interconnected with the Church, giving it an intriguing spiritual hue. As the American Civil War pulled the nation into turmoil in 1861, the young men of UIU, both faculty and students, answered the call of duty. They distinguished themselves in 17 major battles, carrying a flag hand-stitched by the women of UIU.
When World War I echoed its dreadful call in 1917, brave male students traded their pens for rifles, and the ever-dutiful female students ventured into humanitarian service by organizing American Red Cross classes. In a twist of roles, the gym served as countrymen's barracks, and the athletic field witnessed not games, but serious military drills.
Endorsing its pioneer status by 1920, UIU embarked on an inclusive program reaching the northeastern fringes of Iowa. A second world war surged the university's enrollment, as war veterans took advantage of the G.I. Bill to continue their interrupted education between 1947 and 1950.
Fast-forward to 1972, and you'll find UIU pioneers yet again, launching an external degree program inclusive of independent study and online programs. In no time, the UIU flag of education fluttered in cities across the U.S., with approval to offer graduate degrees coming through in 1995. In less than a decade, it had already established international centers in popular destinations like Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, and Vancouver, Canada.
Between 1994 and 2003, the Fayette campus of UIU underwent transformations that still leave visitors awe-struck. An array of developments took place — from erecting Lee Tower Residence Halls, acquiring a new physical plant, building an eye-catching recreation center, to constructing the state-of-the-art Andres Center for Business and Education. Under the dynamic leadership of Alan G Walker, appointed as the 20th president in 2004, the University continued its growth—$75 million was invested in capital improvements in 2009, allowing for a new student center, stylish suite-style housing, and a Liberal Arts academic building.
Sadly, like all great institutions, UIU also faced challenges. Financial distress in 2023 led to the pruning of academic programs in sociology, information systems, information technology, intensive English, and sports administration, as well as few sports programs, and two satellite campuses. It's part of a journey that a resilient UIU continues to traverse, forever seeking a path to continued excellence and salutary service.
