History Fayetteville State University

Back in 1865, immediately after the Civil War, Fayetteville's African American community made an ambitious stride towards educational reform. They laid the groundwork by establishing the Phillips and Sumner Schools for primary and intermediate learning - a pioneering milestone in African American education. Eventually, in 1867, these two initial establishments combined and metamorphosed into the Howard School, named after the visionary, Freedmen's Bureau chief General Oliver O. Howard.

This significant merger witnessed an outstanding level of support from seven African American leaders - Matthew N. Leary, Andrew J. Chestnutt, Robert Simmons, George Grainger, Thomas Lomax, Nelson Carter, and David A. Bryant. Pooling $136, they made the historic move of buying two lots on Gillespie Street in Fayetteville. Their united efforts birthed a Board of Trustees who would oversee the operation and maintain the property for educating the black youth.

As the years rolled on, it was in 1877 that the North Carolina legislature took notice of the success of the Howard School and recognized its potential by establishing a teacher-training institution for African Americans - a first in the state. As a result, the Howard School became the State Colored Normal School and emerged as the first state-sponsored institution oriented towards the education of African American teachers in the South.

In 1883, an influential figure by the name of Dr. Ezekiel Ezra Smith, a proud graduate of Shaw Collegiate Institute, was appointed as the Principal and Chief Administrative Officer of the State Colored Normal School. Dr. Smith held this position for 50 years, making significant contributions - most notable among which was the movement of the school to a permanent site on Murchison Road. It was under his leadership that the school expanded to encompass 92 acres and various key infrastructure including major buildings and cottages.

Dr. Smith's tenure also asserted significant changes in the internal working of the institution. By 1929, high school work had been suspended and the title of Principal was upgraded to 'President.' When he finally retired on June 30, 1933, the school added yet another feather to its cap by having its first ever President Emeritus.

After Dr. Smith's retirement, the university went through a transformative phase. Under the leadership of Dr. J. Ward Seabrook, the institution transitioned into the Fayetteville State Teachers College in 1939, thereby elevating to a state and regionally accredited four-year college offering Bachelor of Science degree in education. The institution's charter was later revised in 1959 under Dr. Rudolph Jones’ presidency leading to the expansion of programs to degrees outside the teaching field and becoming Fayetteville State College in 1963.

In 1969, under the leadership of Dr. Charles Lyons Jr., the college made yet another monumental stride. It was officially renamed as Fayetteville State University, and was designated a regional university by an act of the state legislature. By 1972, the university was consolidated into The University of North Carolina and offered a variety of masters and baccalaureate degree programs.

The year 1988 observed the appointment of Dr. Lloyd Hackley as the chancellor. He advanced the institution's growth by establishing the first doctoral program in Educational Leadership in 1994. Dr. Hackley’s time in office also marked the initiation of numerous community outreach programs and the enhancement of scholarship opportunities for students.

But perhaps one of the most pivotal moments in the institution's history came in 2003 when Dr. Thelma Jane "T.J." Bryan became the first female chancellor, thus demolishing yet another barrier. Under her leadership, the institution greatly expanded, implementing more undergraduate and graduate offerings and becoming a pioneer in distance-learning enrollments. In 2021, the institution saw the appointment of Darrell T. Allison as the 12th chief executive officer and Chancellor of Fayetteville State University.
