History University of North Alabama

Dive into the engaging story of the University of North Alabama. This illustrious institution of learning had humble beginnings as LaGrange College, established on January 11, 1830. Nestled in a quaint mountain hamlet not far from Leighton in Alabama's Colbert County, it acquired its name symbolising "The Barn" in French. A group of 21 committed trustees, as documented in Alabama's official Acts, set the wheels in motion.

Fast forward to 1863, and the picture wasn't rosy. Union soldiers wreaked havoc, torching the idyllic town and its blossoming college. However, the beacon of knowledge had already relocated across the Tennessee River to the inviting city of Florence, effectively shielding it from the chaos. Changing names and locations wasn't new to the college. It started as LaGrange, got rechristened as Florence Wesleyan University in 1855, and finally transformed into the University of North Alabama.

Imagine this. A conference in November 1826, under the aegis of the Tennessee Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, sparked the idea which led to LaGrange's creation. It was decided that the burgeoning college would not bear a religious or theological mantle. And thus, in January 1829, the administration chose Lawrence Hill on LaGrange Mountain as the ideal site. In just about a year, LaGrange began welcoming eager students in its brick bastions of learning.

Respected Reverend Robert Paine helmed the institution as its first president, also teaching moral science, belles lettres, geography and mineralogy. He wasn't carrying this immense responsibility alone, for he had help from two other professors. The decision-making body of the college was diverse, with a 50-member board of trustees, even including two indigenous Native Americans.

LaGrange’s student body was enriched by four military cadets from each of Alabama's counties after becoming LaGrange College and Military Academy in 1858. They constituted 47 out of 171 students by 1861. The students and faculty played their part during the tumultuous times of the Civil War, forming the 35th Alabama Infantry as the nation was fractured by secession. They stood their ground on April 28, 1863, when Union soldiers destroyed their campus, which housed a rich library of 4,000 volumes.

LaGrange College's saga didn't end with its ominous closure in 1858. Dr. Richard H. Rivers, a former student turned president, reincarnated the college in Florence as Florence Wesleyan University in 1854. However, he didn't shift alone. Most students and all but one faculty member followed, underlining their allegiance to the college.

Status change and hardships walked hand-in-hand for Florence Wesleyan University. It was bequeathed by the Methodist Church to the State of Alabama in 1872, becoming the State Normal School at Florence. It earned the distinction of being the south's first state-supported teachers college. Following this, it soon became one of the nation's first coeducational institutes. Admission multiplied once women enrolled in 1874, and by 1879, the faculty too became coeducational.

Alabama's history owes much to the university's professor Newton W. Bates and his groundbreaking textbook on the state's civil government. The university's journey from a normal school to a four-year teachers' college took over 50 years – from 1929 to 1981. During the transformation, its pioneer alumnus - the Pulitzer-prize laureate T.S. Stribling – stayed true to his alma mater, leading the Southern Renaissance with his riveting novels.

In the politically heated climate of 1963, the university braved the waters by bestowing admission on African American student Wendell Wilkie Gunn, who later served under President Ronald Reagan as an international trade adviser.

The 1967 legislature established a board of trustees to oversee the college and subsequently changed its name to Florence State College. Ever-expanding, the Florence State University emerged in 1968 under President Ethelbert Brinkley "E.B." Norton. Transforming into the University of North Alabama on August 15, 1974, the college announced its arrival as a comprehensive, regional university to the world. Dr. Kenneth D. Kitts, previously a provost at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, currently serves as the 20th President of the University of North Alabama since March 2015.

Thus, the University of North Alabama is not just an educational institution. It's a resilient entity that has witnessed and negotiated numerous turns of history with grace. Its journey inspires students across the world, beckoning them to become part of this iconic narrative.
