Nestled in the heart of the United States, the story of Marian University commences, not in recent times mind you, but way back in 1851. Picture this: a band of brave and sprightly Sisters of St. Francis, Oldenburg, Indiana decided, "Education is what we need!". And, Bob's your uncle, they went on to birth this esteemed institution of learning.
Jump cut to 1936. The Sisters decided just running a college wasn't cutting the mustard and upgraded the academy to a college, and don't ya know, the name 'Marian College' came into being. Bless their cotton socks, they truly were forward-thinking.
And talk about moving with the times, fast-forward to 1954. The location of the campus was switched from Oldenburg to Indianapolis to cater to the ever-increasing number of students. More space, more opportunity. To evoke the words of Dirty Harry, “A good educational institution’s gotta know its limitations”.
Then rolled around 2001. The Sisters, never ones for resting on their laurels, expanded the Marian College to include a graduate program. Y'know, ‘cause learning never really stops, does it?
In 2007, the movers and shakers, led by President Daniel J. Elsener, introduced a College of Osteopathic Medicine, making it Indiana’s first medical school in 110 years! Talk about making history.
Skipping to 2009, Marian College punched above its weight, transforming into a full-fledged university. Thus, the phoenix rose, and Marian University was officially born. And, as they say, the rest’s history.
Ain’t no stopping them now. 2013 marked the expansion of Marian University with the creation of the Byrum School of Business. From academics to sports, the university did win some, lose some, achieving various national championships and sporting feats along the way.
