Back in the day, during the year 1846, a brave pioneer woman named Tabitha Moffatt Brown embarked on an audacious journey. Moving from Massachusetts, she and her companion Harvey L. Clark ventured into unexplored territories over the new Applegate Trail. On reaching the Oregon Country, they were deeply moved by the plight of the orphan children. Driven by compassion, they opened a school and an orphanage, in 1847, in a tranquil place named Forest Grove.
Clark was a man of generosity and foresight. He donated a vast expanse of 200 acres (80.9 ha) to give the school, named Tualatin Academy, a robust start in March 1848. They weren't alone in their noble mission. George H. Atkinson, a passionate advocate of education, enthusiastically supported the foundation of the school along with Presbyterians and Congregationalists. Eliza Hart Spalding, with firsthand experience of the Whitman Mission, became the first teacher and contributed to shaping the young minds.
Over the years, the university developed a close, yet independent, relationship with the United Church of Christ (UCC). Even as it established its own identity, it continued to honor its roots by remaining a member of the UCC Council for Higher Education.
Receiving its official charter from the territorial legislature on September 29, 1849, the Tualatin Academy transformed into a recognized educational institute. Clark, the first president of the board of trustees, added another 150 acres (60.7 ha) to the institution. Progressing further in its journey, the institute constructed what is now known as Old College Hall in 1851 and welcomed Sidney H. Marsh as its first president in 1853.
Fast forward to 1854, and the Tualatin Academy had morphed into Pacific University. Its first graduation ceremony took place in 1863, with Harvey W. Scott being the only graduate of the initial batch. In 1872, the university opened its doors to international students. The first among them were three Japanese students - Hatstara Tamura, Kin Saito, and Yei Nosea. They commenced their studies as part of Japan's modernization movement and became proud graduates in 1876.
Marsh, after a decade of service, passed away in 1879. He was succeeded by John R. Herrick as the new beacon leading Pacific University on its educational voyage.
The story of Pacific University Oregon turned a new chapter with the construction of Marsh Hall in 1895, which subsequently became a central feature on campus. A significant enhancement followed in 1912 with the establishment of Carnegie Library (now Carnegie Hall), made possible by financial support from Andrew Carnegie's foundation.
However, not all parts of the university's history were grand. A disastrous fire in 1975 gutted Marsh Hall, leaving only its shell. But like a phoenix, it rose from the ashes and reopened in 1977. The university saw leadership changes with Phillip D. Creighton taking over as the 16th president in 2003 and retiring in 2009. Lesley M. Hallick was named as Pacific's 17th president on May 19, 2009.
A unique chapter in the institution's history involves a bronze Chinese statue, a gift from alumnus J.E. Walker in 1896. Named Qilin, this mythical creature symbolized wisdom and prosperity. Qilin, which over the years became recognized as the university's official mascot, mysteriously disappeared.
