Not quite a century and a half ago, in 1869, a little seedling of an institution was planted in Indiana, USA. Feisty local businessman John Purdue, with a dib on his name and his hard-earned fortune of $150,000, went ahead and founded, yep you guessed it, Purdue University! In the annals of time, this would become a fountainhead of knowledge churning out great minds, and let me spill the beans here, 25 amazing astronauts!
The early batches were a motley crew indeed. A handful of instructors, just six, handling 39 students in a solitary building. Hot potato! Talk about a personalised education. Picture the flame of knowledge being passed down through such intimate interactions. Inch by inch, the university began to strengthen its roots firming itself into academia.
Then, the winds of change happened to blow over Purdue. In came Emma Montgomery McRae in 1875, a fiery young lady who broke the proverbial glass ceiling and became the first woman to graduate from Purdue. A "pat on the back" for equality and diversity.
Over the years, Purdue began to branch out. It was not just about bookworm-stuff but hands-on, practical learning. Walking the talk, Purdue launched its first flight course in 1930 and boy oh boy, it translated! Fast forward to 1961, the world stood still, holding its breath as Gus Grissom, a Purdue alum, took his maiden voyage into space. Another one bites the dust! In the realm of space, Purdue had set the wheels moving.
Now, be ready to pick your jaws off the floor. Purdue is not all about the stars and skies. It has a heart beating for the earth too. In 1972, Purdue established an entire school dedicated to the Environment and Ecological Engineering. Wasting no time, the forestry and natural resources program also got a whole new research facility in 1974. Now, that's commitment.
Onto the dawn of the 21st century, the worldwide web was changing the dynamics of education. Right on cue, Purdue hopped on the bandwagon. In 2004, Purdue spearheaded a brand new online learning portal. No longer was it just a physical entity. With this digital avatar, Purdue became a virtual learning paradise serving knowledge on a platter across the globe.
Putting all its chips down on research and development, Purdue busted out in 2011, ranking 8th nationally for patents issued. Talk of betting on the right horse! This move shoveled in a whopping 223 patents and elevated Purdue to the innovation big leagues.
Not one to buckle under challenges, Purdue showed its mettle again when the pandemic struck. Adapting swiftly, in the Covid-stricken year of 2020, Purdue online enrolments surged by a staggering 175%. Now, that's what you call making lemonade out of lemons!
And you know what? As we speak, Purdue, the mighty powerhouse of learning continues to evolve responding to the changing world and etching its name as one of the finest places to quench the thirst of eager minds worldwide. Hop on this ride, my friends. It ain't slowing down anytime soon! And who knows? Maybe there is an astronaut or environmental saviour among you ready to take the Purdue flight to achieving dreams. Mark this down, you'll be in great company!
