History Texas Wesleyan University

In 1890, the foundational stone of Texas Wesleyan University saw its first day of light. It began its journey as Polytechnic College, fostered into existence by the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. A selflessly dedicated committee, led by Bishop Joseph S. Key, scoured endless locations before landing on what can only be called destiny. It was a captivating site, east of Fort Worth. Its beauty and strategic location were not its only selling points. The land was generously donated by three area pioneers; A.S. Hall, W.D. Hall, and George Tandy.

Come September 1891, the first bundle of eager students totalling 111 touched the doors of knowledge and promise. The college managed to sustain its fair share of growth under the watchful leadership of H.A. Boaz, who stepped up as the president in 1902. Boaz had a vision. He dreamed of nurturing the Polytechnic College into a novel university, a jewel in the crown of Southern Methodism.

However, when Southern Methodist University found its home in Dallas chosen by the Methodist Church leaders, a new role was envisioned for the Polytechnic campus. It was anointed as the "woman's college for Southern Methodism". Embracing its new identity, it transformed into Texas Woman's College in 1914, inviting young women from all corners of Texas and the Southwest.

Then came the challenging times of the Great Depression. Faced with depleting resources, the college's trustees made a heavy-hearted decision to close the school in 1931. But, as they say, destiny always has a plan. Just as the college was on the brink of failure, a union with the sturdy Texas Wesleyan Academy in Austin reinvented its future, birthing Texas Wesleyan College in 1934. In a move welcomed by many, men too were admitted again the same year, restoring the institution's co-educational status.

With evolving times, the university expanded its academic horizon and added graduate programs in education in the 1970s and in nurse anesthesia in the 1980s. Amidst contemplations of resettling the campus to west Fort Worth, the university recommitted to its historic Polytechnic Heights Neighborhood location. Here, the university built the Eunice and James L. West Library in October 1988.

Recognising the exponential growth in programs, the trustees decided to amplify the university’s identity by renaming it to know it as we do today, Texas Wesleyan University, in January 1989. To address the unique needs of adult learners and to enable flexible scheduling of courses, the C.E. Hyde Weekend/Evening Program was added in 1994.

In 1997, the university extended its influential presence to downtown Fort Worth by setting up a campus which included the Texas Wesleyan University School of Law. This law school was built upon the foundation of the former Dallas/Fort Worth School of Law acquired in 1992. However, the TWU School of Law got a new guardian when it was purchased by Texas A&M University for a staggering $73 million in 2013.

The journey of growth continued, and in 2015, the university witnessed the grand completion of the Rosedale Renaissance project led by university president Frederick G. Slabach. This ambitious $5.7 million project not only energized the Texas Wesleyan campus, but also revitalized the surrounding Polytechnic Heights neighborhood. This led to the inception of the Canafax Clock Tower, the United Methodist Church Central Texas Conference Service Center, and breathed new life into the Polytechnic Firehouse's renovation.

The beacon of change illuminated Texas Wesleyan once again, on July 1, 2023. The university opened its doors to welcome its first female president, Dr. Emily W. Messer, writing a brand-new chapter in the illustrious history of Texas Wesleyan. And so, the legacy continues, fueling dreams and shaping futures.
