Horace Mann, the first secretary of the freshly-set Board of Education in Massachusetts, set the ball rolling for educational reforms that still hold water today. Back in July 1839, he brought to life an unconventional idea – the groundbreaking first experimental normal school in the United States, in Lexington. Christened as "the Normal School in Lexington," its first principal was an educator of note, Cyrus Peirce.
Come September, the movement found an even stronger footing. Two schools, born out of the same ethos were established - one in West Barre (which eventually settled in Westfield) and the second one, Bridgewater State College in the following year. But the weight of growth and ambition soon necessitated a change, leading Lexington’s normal school to pave its way to West Newton in 1843.
Originally named "the Normal School in West Newton," the institution curiously rechristened itself twice in the context of two years. In 1845, it became "the State Normal School in West Newton", a moniker that only stayed synonymous for a decade. An interesting turn of events led the school to find its present abode on Bare Hill in Framingham, in 1853. Reborn in a new place, it embraced a fitting new name – "The State Normal School in Framingham."
It didn't stop at that though. The Framingham institution made a couple of more shifts in nomenclature in its nascent years. It became the "Framingham Normal School" in 1865 and then ten years later, "Framingham State Normal School." Another significant shift came in 1922, with the adoption of a rigorous four-year study program. The school issued its first-ever "Bachelor of Science in Education" degrees. It was a move that offered the first inklings of the institution's ambitious academic growth project.
A decade later, all normal schools across Massachusetts rebranded as state teacher's colleges. It was during this wave of change that Framingham school morphed into "The State Teachers College at Framingham", churning out degree-holding teachers, a majority of which held influential roles in academia. The nomenclature stuck around until 1945 when it slightly adjusted to "Framingham State Teachers College."
The next big leap for the school came in 1960 when it expanded its academic repertoire to offer the coveted Bachelor of Art degrees. Subsequently, it was rebranded as "The State College at Framingham" and five years later, it was minimally edited to "Framingham State College." However, the school continued to add valuable post-graduate degrees in Education, Arts, and Science, maintaining its place as a sought-after institution.
The storyline of Framingham found an intriguing addition in 2007. The college started offering a Master's degree in Business Administration (MBA). Three years later, in 2010, alongside six other state colleges, it evolved into a state university, independent of the University of Massachusetts system. At this historic moment, it adorned a fresh, modern identity – "Framingham State University", a title that it continues to bear till date. This transformation, as it remains firmly etched in the annals of the school's history, was lawfully validated by Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick on July 28, 2010.
