Founded in 1865 by the spirited Dr. Oliver Dean, Dean College's story is one of resilience, transformation, and a passionate dedication to learning that continues to this day. The story started with Dr. Dean, a fervent advocate for education, who generously gave around nine acres of land solely for the foundation of what was initially known as Dean Academy.
Can you envision the first class of Dean Academy? Picture this: It's October 1, 1866, the year of the groundbreaking ceremony, where a vibrant group of 44 pioneer students embarked on their academic journey. Not at a grand university building, but at the modest premises of a local Universalist Church.
A couple of years later, in 1868, the cornerstone of the academy's establishment, Dean Hall, finally came into existence. A pivotal chapter of Dean's history was written in the summer of 1872 when a devastating fire engulfed Dean Hall. But the resilient Dean spirit did not crumble. The reconstruction began promptly, lending a phoenix-like rebirth to Dean Hall that we see today. It was rededicated on June 7, 1874, standing as a symbol of unyielding resolve.
The academy didn't stop evolving, and in May 1941, the name changed to Dean Junior College. Fast-forward to 1994, embracing the ever-evolving education landscape; the institution we now know as Dean College came into being.
Did you know the college's mascot, a bulldog, goes by the name Boomer? There must be some captivating tales behind that.
Now, isn't it intriguing that the college's alumni list reads like a veritable "Who's Who"? Imagine walking the same corridors that produced talents like Richard Belzer from Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Though, the actor didn't exactly tread the conventional path, eventually being expelled when it was still known as Dean Junior College.
And that's not where the illustrious list ends. The founders of CVS Pharmacy, Sid Goldstein and Stanley Goldstein, called Dean their Alma Mater. So did Austin Barclay Fletcher, the founder of the prestigious Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy.
Dean's alumni athlete list boasts names like Major League Baseball players Eddie Grant and Gabby Hartnett, sportscaster Greg Dickerson, and professional football player Zachary Dixon. Literary and Hollywood sectors are not left behind; best-selling author Emilie Baker Loring and Academy Award-winning actor Broderick Crawford are also part of the Dean alumni.
Dean's history is not just a timeline of events and names. It's a canvas, vividly splashed with aspirations, challenges, victories, and the undying spirit of learning. Look at the students around you, your friends and teachers. In time, they'll be integral threads in the rich tapestry of Dean College. Just as many before you have left their distinctive mark. What will your unique contribution be? Will you be among those who carry forward the legacy of Dr. Dean's passionate dream?
