Let's hop onto the time-machine, travel back to 1857 and set foot in the Golden State of California. Right where we are standing now, on this very ground, sprouted the seeds of what would eventually bloom into the mighty California State University (CSU). Nifty, huh? Just imagine, folks back then were dusting off their coattails and setting up shop, right here, to form what we now know as the Minns' Evening Normal School in San Francisco.
Roll on 1862, and the fledgling Minns' School finds a new home under the name of California State Normal School, thanks to the passionate guidance of lawmaker John Swett, and Edward Dickinson Baker. These two lads, bless their cotton socks, had the ambition to create a public institution of higher learning, something that still reverberates in CSU's ethos today.
Fast forward to 1921. Picture this – the silent film era was in full swing, Gatsby was the talk of the literary world, and our beloved institution came up with a tagline – "Teacher's Colleges of California." Sail on to 1972, and what do we see? Our so far, unnamed hero! Dr. Glenn S. Dumke becomes the first to hold the title of the Chancellor. He successfully leads the charge for a vital name-change to what we know as the 'California State University'. More applause, folks!
Fasten your seatbelts and accelerate to 2020. We're flying and how! The CSU appellation now shines brightly across 23 campuses, with a whopping enrollment of roughly half a million students!
