In 1968, the state of New Jersey decided to invest in education like never before. An incredible $202.5 million was set aside for a special purpose - creating a wholly new state college. A huge part of this pot, $15 million to be exact, was prescribed to create an educational beacon in the Southern part of New Jersey.
This was not a decision made lightly, or quickly. In 1969, a sprawling 1,600-acre tract of land nestled within the luscious embrace of the New Jersey Pine Barrens in Galloway Township was chosen. The trustees initially proposed the name as "South Jersey State College", but after a few deliberations, they pivoted to "Stockton State College". This was done to avoid any potential confusion with another institution, Rutgers College of South Jersey.
Moving forward into 1970, as the wheels of progress started making their relentless turn, construction started to lag behind the set schedule. The trustees, wearing the mantle of responsibility, needed a quick solution. The perfect answer came in the form of the historic Mayflower Hotel in Atlantic City. Their decision proved vital in ensuring the first class commenced smoothly in 1971.
The first academic year witnessed a buzz of activity. A group of 1,000 students, among them, 50 unique Educational Opportunity Fund students, converged on the campus; backed by 97 staff and 60 full-time faculty. Having made the former resort hotel their own, learning commenced. By the end of December, everything was ready to move to the new campus in Galloway Township.
The accolades followed soon after. In 1975, Stockton State College earned its accreditation from the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. And to top it off, in 1991, the college’s accreditation was unconditionally reaffirmed for another decade. This faith was again underlined when the accreditation was most recently reaffirmed in 2012.
Environmental accolades came flooding in too. In 1978, The US Congress passed a historic legislation which led to the inception of the New Jersey Pinelands National Reserve – the nation’s first. Its purpose: protecting the area's delicate, unique ecology and the vital aquifer serving the surrounding region. A decade later, the United Nations followed suit, designating it an International Biosphere Reserve.
The growth of Stockton was rapid and overwhelming. In 1981, they opened Housing II. By February 1983, the inauguration of the N-Wing College Center & Housing III led to a remarkable student-residency rate among New Jersey's state colleges.
Then arrived a transformative phase in 1993. The college changed its name to the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey. Rochelle Hendricks, New Jersey Secretary of Higher Education, endorsed Stockton's bid to become a university on February 13, 2015. Stockton University was officially born on February 18, 2015.
In 2017, Stockton University undertook an ambitious project in the Chelsea neighborhood of Atlantic City. By Thanksgiving 2018, the campus was ready. An outlay of $178.28 million, three stories tall, with a modern apartment-style complex for student living named Kessleman Hall. This initiative also expanded the retail space along the Atlantic City boardwalk.
Richard E. Bjork, Mitchell, Vera King Farris, Herman Saatkamp – these are just few of those who had a major say in shaping university. But a special mention has to be made for Harvey Kesselman. Under his guidance, Stockton added new academic programs and oversaw a significant growth in facilities at the Galloway campus and also reinforced the university's roots in Atlantic City.
The year 2018 was significant. Stockton commissioned the construction of a $33.2 million Unified Science Center 2 and a $15.2 million classroom building, creating an impressive new Academic Quad. The campus now had residences for 533 students with a breathtaking view of the beach and Boardwalk. Alongside, the Academic Center had provisions for up to a stunning 1,800 students.
This is the saga of Stockton University thus far – a chronicle of determination, resilience, and excellence.
