Journey back in time with me to the year 1863, where in the heart of Brooklyn, New York, a humble establishment known as the Adelphi Academy comes to life. Nestled snugly in the Fort Greene neighbourhood, this private preparatory school was lovingly birthed by the board of trustees of the City of Brooklyn. Their vision? To craft a top-tier institution aimed at spreading unparalleled training to as many people as possible. Among these dedicated educators was Harlan Fiske Stone, a man who later graced the esteemed position of the Chief Justice of the United States.
Come 1893, we witness Charles Herbert Levermore appointed as the head of Adelphi Academy. He craved to break academic limits and establish a liberal arts college, and his determination received a nod of approval from the Board of Regents of the State of New York. Thus, Adelphi College was officially christened on June 24, 1896, thanks to the relentless endeavours of Timothy Woodruff, the then former Lieutenant Governor of New York. As the embers of the 19th century ebbed, this establishment, with 57 students and 16 instructors, proudly stood as one of the first coeducational institutions in the state.
The Adelphi Academy's existence continued as Adelphi College grew and thrived. All was a buzz of activity as the new college was located just behind the academy. That treasured building now honourably serves Pratt Institute's School of Architecture! Can you picture the excitement as enrollment grew, and the need for more space? In 1922, the school raised over a million dollars to expand their cramped quarters in Brooklyn.
Fast forward to 1929, the Adelphi populace waved goodbye to their old stomping grounds in Brooklyn and settled into their new residence in Garden City, New York, leaving the remnants of Adelphi Academy behind. The original "academy" weathered the change, standing tall as a K-12 school in Brooklyn. The primary buildings in Garden City, Levermore Hall, Blodgett Hall, and Woodruff Hall, earned their names through McKim, Mead and White's architectural excellence.
Our timeline jumps now to 1938. Let's sway with the twirling skirts of the Dance Program, thanks to Ruth St. Denis, the global dance sensation. In 1943, amidst the grim reality of World War II, the School of Nursing was created to meet the urgent demand for nurses. Eleanor Roosevelt, the then First Lady, visited campus, presiding over the inauguration of residence halls in a stirring speech called "The Challenge of Nursing for Young Women Today."
Post World War II, with recent memory of the harsh reality of 1946 lingering, Adelphi rebuilt its reputation as a coeducational institution and began admitting students under the federal GI Bill. Then we witness another milestone as the first program for clinical psychology is inaugurated in 1952. This revolutionary development would later give birth to the Gordon F. Derner School of Psychology.
Zoom forward to 1963, a momentous year as the New York State Board of Regents bestowed upon the college university status. From there, our beloved institution donned a new moniker, Adelphi University. Two years later, the School of Business was created and the education services continued to edify all who sought learning, the cornerstone of our society.
Come 1968, we witness Adelphi Suffolk College's merge with Dowling College. But by 1996, Adelphi faced a scandal that tested its resilience, as allegations were made against university president Peter Diamandopoulos and the board of trustees. Yet, like a phoenix rising from the ashes, Adelphi University manoeuvred its way through dire straits under the careful guidance of President Robert A. Scott, implemented in 2000.
Since then, Adelphi, dubbed a "Best Buy" college by the Fiske Guide to Colleges, ticked off milestones, earning the title of a "Green College" from the Princeton Review in 2023. As we reach the present day, the Manhattan Center move to Downtown Brooklyn shows us that Adelphi continues to adapt and evolve, maintaining its commitment to the education of the largest numbers of our population.
