In the early 1900s, concerns over a shortage of adequately prepared teachers in New Jersey led to a significant decision. This location, accompanied by a generous 25 acres, became home to the Glassboro Normal School by 1923. Between 1935 and 1944, Glassboro introduced programs for training teachers grappling with reading disabilities and physical therapy. The college surged forward, developing a reputation as a leader in special education. The return of World War II veterans further fueled expansion as enrollment rose from a modest number of 170 in 1943. What started as a small institute in 1958 had bloomed into Glassboro State College.
Glassboro didn't just buzz with ideas from classrooms and libraries. It held a significant place in world history too! For instance, between June 23–25, 1967, the Glassboro Summit Conference unfolded, with US President Lyndon Johnson and Soviet Premier Alexei Kosygin deliberating on world events. This location was picked because apparently, it sat comfortably between New York City, where Kosygin was making a U.N. speech, and Washington, D.C.
Within the confines of the Hollybush Mansion on the Glassboro State College campus, then-President Dr. Thomas E. Robinson scrambled to prepare for the impending visit. With only 16 hours' notice, Dr. Robinson managed to secure his on-campus home for these important talks. If college walls could talk, they’d have quite the tale to share!
During the 1970s and '80s, the college made a few headlines. Home to Black Sabbath’s first U.S. concert in 1970, Glassboro also became known for its animated Spring Weekend parties, even making it into Playboy’s 1987 ranking as the #28 Party School. Interestingly, the college's Zeta Beta Tau fraternity was also featured as one of the Animal House contenders in the Greek section of that Playboy issue.
Cracking down on the hard-partying reputation, Glassboro State College’s president at the time, Herman James, took stringent measures towards maintaining discipline, leading to the eventual end of the alcohol-fueled Spring Weekends. However, these were replaced by a non-alcoholic variant of the event, letting the tradition live on for a few more years.
In 1992, everything changed. Fuelled by a generous $100 million donation by MIT alumnus Henry M. Rowan, Jr., Glassboro State College evolved into Rowan University. This financial boost led to the opening of a College of Engineering and other course offerings, allowing the institution to attain university status by 1997.
As the millennium unfolded, the university continued its expansion under then-president Dr. Donald Farish.
