Imagine being transported back to 1889, a year that saw the birth of an unforgettable academy. This is the story of the Webb Institute. A domain envisioned and established by one of the forefathers of shipbuilding, William Henry Webb. A man ahead of his times, his sights were set on introducing the magic of science and engineering to the art form of shipbuilding.
Comprehending the future needs of ship design, Webb could foresee that aural mastery of structural and mechanical engineering would be a prerequisite. This keen foresight led to the conception of an institute specialized in marine engineering and naval architecture. As we move forward to 1893, a handful of pioneering students held the honor of being the first graduating class of this visionary institute.
Not stopping at just being an educational establishment, Webb wanted to ensure that the institute also provided comfort in the twilight years of shipbuilders. And so, on a sunny day, April 2, 1889, Webb's Academy and Home for Shipbuilders was born, as a non-profit center, nestled in the heart of New York.
A few steps taken outdoors and one could breathe in the combined air of the Hudson and Harlem rivers. This vantage point in the Bronx, covered by 14 acres of greenery was deemed perfect by Webb, for the foundation stone of his dream institution. The magnificent structure, built between 1890 and 1893, stood as a testament to the Romanesque Revival style.
The institution thrived for half a century as the city breathes war-time air during World War II. Webb's Institution found itself assuming the role of a training ground for the brave officers of the U.S. Navy.
Years rolled on and by 1945, the board of trustees concluded a shift was in order. The sale of its Bronx campus funded its relocation to a spacious country estate, The Braes, in Glen Cove. The property, earlier owned by Herbert L. Pratt, boasted of a unique architectural blend of Jacobean, Tudor, and Renaissance styles.
In the heart of Spring, April, 1947, the premises echoed with academic discussions once again. Along with the institute's relocation, its students were also relishing in the charm of living in an estate. The campus was revamped to include living spaces, lecture rooms and offices. A gymnasium and model basin were added as extra feathers to its cap.
European charm flowed through the ground floor of Stevenson Taylor Hall, named to honor one of the early presidents of the Board of Trustees. The 1970s saw two significant additions to the campus, an auditorium and a library in 1971, and the breaking of a glass ceiling with the admission of female students in 1974.
Proving its aesthetic appeal, the Webb Institute has served as movie sets on multiple occasions for Hollywood blockbusters like Batman Forever in 1995 and 1997’s Batman & Robin. It also played backdrop in the 1998 movie Great Expectations and found its way into our living rooms in the 2015 TV series Limitless.
To date, the Webb Institute continues to hold its flag high under the leadership of its 18th administrator. It stands strong, bridging the gap between history and modernity, art and science, and dreams and reality. And so, the story of the Webb Institute continues. So, let's ask ourselves, are you ready to be a part of this ongoing tale?
