History Arizona State University

Founded in the Wild West era, in 1885, Arizona State University or ASU, didn’t exactly kick-start as a university, but as a humble teacher's college, with only 33 students to boast. Now let us chew the fat - 33 may seem like a small number today, but back then it was an impressive start. The goal was simple - to train educators and churn out the kind of knowledge that would ignite the minds of the young Arizona populace and beyond.

The name of the institution was a mouthful - The Territorial Normal School at Tempe. Graced with its first building in 1898, Old Main, it remains the heart and soul of ASU’s illustrious history—a touching tribute to the institution’s beginnings. The clock on top of Old Main serves as a reminder of the relentless passage of time and the countless generations of students who have walked its halls.

In 1945, the reins of the university fell into the hands of a dynamic visionary, Dr. Grady Gammage. Now, this bloke had an idea or two! His torchlight lit the path for ASU's transformation. Gammage pushed the envelope, striving hard to turn ASU into a real-deal university. His relentless efforts yielded sweet fruits in 1958 when ASU was well and truly crowned a university. The period marked the transformation of a college-town into a university.

Our journey isn't over, hang on. The university, much like a seedling, kept growing under the loving gaze of the sun. This was the era of Dr. Lattie Coor. The reins changed hands but the vision remained the same – a resolute commitment to high-quality education. Under Coor's leadership in 1990, the ASU Main campus expanded exponentially, gaining a state-of-the-art library and top-notch research facilities.

Jump ahead a few years, and ASU morphed into a multi-campus powerhouse, under the stewardship of its 16th president, Dr. Michael M. Crow. His enterprising initiatives, in 2002, redefined the concept of a 'public university', catapulting ASU into the light of global academia. Dr. Crow always believed in the magic of change, so the year 2014 saw the establishment of the ASU Online platform. This was a transformative step in nurturing and embracing a new dimension of education.

So, let's put it in a nutshell, shall we? From a humble beginning as The Territorial Normal School at Tempe to its blaze of glory as the Arizona State University, ASU's journey is a tale sprinkled with the spunk of determination, transformation, and innovation. Today, it stands tall with over 90,000 students, four impressive campuses, millions of online learners, and a proud history to vouch for. Phew! Now that's going some!

Our lovely ASU's rise isn't just laudable, but it’s an inspiration that teaches us to never call it quits, as each milestone is a testament to its relentless pursuit of excellence. An excellent hub for Indian students who wish to hit the books abroad, ASU allows you to bask in the spirit of global learning with a heart full of Western warmth. So, are you ready to become a part of its historic journey and pen your own ASU saga? Brilliant! ASU is darn excited to welcome you aboard!
