As we delve into the history of Arcadia University, the journey begins in 1853 in the region of Western Pennsylvania. Two spirited young women, Sylvania Jones and Juliet A. Poundstone, dared to venture away from their homes in Lafayette County, carrying dreams of attaining an education. They embarked on this journey with Dr. Sheridan Baker, their mentor and principal at their old school, the Brownsville School, to join an innovative institute, the newly designated Beaver Female Seminary.
Headed by President Baker, Beaver College emerged as a beacon of liberal arts and sciences, with a curriculum rich in ancient history, rhetoric, logic, and analogy- a rare sight in an era sparsely dotted with women's colleges. The year 1872 witnessed a significant milestone in its journey as the school scaled up to become the Beaver College and Musical Institute.
The changing times of the late 19th century saw another pioneering move as the college became co-educational, a first in its history. Yet, in 1907, the college simplified its name to Beaver College and once more became exclusive to women.
The adventurous spirit of the college relocates it further east in Pennsylvania to Jenkintown, nestled in the appealing Beechwood Hall estate in 1925. This shift provided room for larger amenities, an aptly sized campus, and unlimited potential for growth while retaining the perks of a small educational institution. The trusty trustees further enhanced the campus by securing an adjacent estate in Glenside, Pennsylvania, in 1928. This furnished the college with distinct stone structures, including the now-iconic Grey Towers Castle.
The institution witnessed another growth spurt around 1933 when Professor Benton Spruance was appointed full professor and chair of the Art Department. His influence reached the Philadelphia Art Commission, leading to the enactment of a city ordinance in 1953. This legislation dictated that a percent of the construction cost for new public edifices would fund the conception and placement of artwork – a stepping stone for public art remuneration throughout the U.S.
1948 introduced another transformative chapter in the story of Beaver College. Seventeen driven undergraduate women, an economics instructor, and his wife embarked on a journey from New York City to Southampton, England to explore the aftermath of World War II. This daring trip laid the groundwork for what evolved into one of the most comprehensive and prestigious international study programs in the U.S., with Arcadia consistently leading in global education.
Fast forward to 1973, and the formerly exclusive women's college becomes coeducational once more, establishing the Centre for Education Abroad in this period. The construction of eight new buildings on its premises further marked its expansion. The concerted effort led to the unification of all its campuses in Glenside in the mid-1960s.
A monumental moment arrived in 1985 when Dr. Bette Landman marked her inception as the university's first female president. Under her dynamic leadership, the institution became a university, observing name transformation from Beaver College to Arcadia University. Her tenure was marked by noteworthy launches including the Kuch Athletic and Recreation Centre, participation in NCAA Division III, and joining as members of the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference in 1992.
The new millennium dawned with a remarkable announcement on November 20, 2000. Beaver College was set to become Arcadia University, with the transition ceremony occurring on July 16, 2001. The initial phase of the 21st century saw the establishment of six academic colleges and schools at the university, keeping international education front and centre through the College of Global Studies.
Major inclusivity and diversity milestones marked this era. In April 2018, Dr. Ajay Nair stepped into the role of the institution's 22nd president. Being the first person of color and among a dozen Indian American presidents in U.S. colleges and universities, he put Arcadia on the map with a strong focus on innovation and diversity at every level of the university.
Under his leadership, the Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) Commission was formed in 2019 to review Arcadia’s policies, practices, and campus climate. Arcadia further dedicated itself to oppose anti-Black racism in 2020 through a myriad of initiatives such as modifying the curriculum, establishing Black living and learning communities, and instituting the Center for Antiracist Scholarship, Advocacy, and Action (CASAA), among others. These measures earned Arcadia national recognition for their diversity and inclusion efforts, including features in the Philadelphia Inquirer and Chronicle of Higher Education.
The story of the university continues to unfold as recently as July 2022, when it enhanced its campus size by acquiring 125 Royal Avenue, the previous site of Bishop McDevitt High School.
Thus, Arcadia stands out for consistently providing integrative real-world learning experiences, securing high national rankings for its Doctor of Physical Therapy and Physician Assistant programs. It
