Once upon a time, in the crisp air of August 1894, there existed a gem in the American Midwest - Elkhart Institute. Started by the "Old" Mennonites in Elkhart, Indiana, it was more than just a school; it was a beacon of hope that would nurture the youth of Mennonite, preparing them for college. Dr. H.A. Mumaw, a prominent physician, first shepherded this small but promising initiative, aided by 15 sagacious Mennonite ministers and laymen, forming together a corporation christened, the Elkhart Institute Association.
Fast-forward to September 1903, the lure from astute businessmen prompted the institute to switch its locale to Goshen, Indiana. With the relocation, came fresh developments. The institute broadened its horizon by introducing a junior college course list and rebranded itself as Goshen College. No sooner than 1905, the reins of the college fell under the control of the Mennonite Board of Education, marking the end of an era for the Elkhart Institute Association.
As time rolled onto 1910, Goshen College stood tall with most of its students enrolled in the college courses. Despite it being a challenging phase, the college strived to establish a "School of Agriculture" and fanned the flames of academic excellence via a college-prep academy program. However, the decade saw a brief period of closure during 1923-1924 due to denominational turmoil stirred by the rise of modernist and fundamentalist Christian theologies.
The flames that indicated a shaky time in Goshen's life ignited a spark of revolt among its faculty and students. Disturbed by the Mennonite Board of Education's decision, they packed their bags and made a beeline to Bluffton College. The storm had passed when the college reopened its gates under the robust leadership of President S.C. Yoder and Dean Noah Oyer. This new era was proudly hailed as the "Goshen Historical Renaissance".
Moving onto the 1940s, Goshen College proved to be a vital cog in the wheel for the Mennonite Central Committee. It established a "relief training school" training volunteers for unpaid jobs in the Civilian Public Service, exhibiting the Mennonite ethos of Biblical pacifism and non-resistance. Brave young women volunteers stepped up, heartily ready to contribute to mental hospitals to show their patriotism.
Heroically, Lois Gunden, a French professor at Goshen, stepped up her game. She volunteered with the Mennonite Central Committee and set up an orphanage for children affected by the Spanish Civil War and Jewish children from Rivesaltes Internment Camp. The recognition for her righteous efforts came with the prestigious title "Righteous Among the Nations" by Yad Vashem.
In 1980, a significant feather was added to Goshen's hat. The Merry Lea Environmental Learning Center, a sprawling 1,150-acre nature preserve, was placed under its care. With this, Goshen started to offer a master's degree in Environmental Science, another significant milestone.
About a decade later, in 1993, Goshen received a lion share of the estate of Harold and Wilma Good, devout friends of the college, and owners of the majority of the J.M. Smucker Company's stock. Their fortune was said to worth millions and when the college sold the stock, it boosted its endowment by a whopping amount, doubling it, infact.
Towards the end of the 90s, the Goshen campus flourished, in terms of infrastructural developments. Bursting with 18 major buildings, it didn't cease to grow in size, escalating from less than 50 acres to 135 acres. Today, Goshen College stands strong, holding in its heart, a tale of challenges, resilience, and steady growth. It's an embodiment of determination, the symbol of academic excellence, ready to foster the dreams of students from around the globe.
