In the summer of 1876, the seeds of a great institution were sown by the Christian Reformed Church in North America. On a warm August day, the 4th to be precise, the church laid the foundation for what would become Calvin College and Theological Seminary. In a humble rented room situated on Spring Street in the heart of Grand Rapids, Michigan, seven students with dreams bound by faith embarked on a journey of academic and spiritual enlightenment.
The robust curriculum that spanned over six years was deeply rooted in theological studies, tailored towards shaping future church ministers. By 1892, the growing institution relocated to Grand Rapids' Madison Avenue and Franklin Street intersection offering a broader spectrum of courses. This move was instrumental in attracting beyond those aspiring to become theologians.
The dawn of the 20th century worthily paved the way for radical changes at Calvin. The institution broadened its curriculum to appeal to students with diverse academic interests. Furthermore, a significant milestone was achieved when Calvin opened its doors to women in 1901. This pivotal moment in its history marked Calvin's transformative journey towards inclusive education.
Fast forward six years, the institution known as John Calvin Junior College proudly held its first commencement. By 1920, the Junior College had morphed into a four-year liberal arts college, offering its first bachelor’s degree a year later.

By the mid-20th century, the college acquired the Knollcrest farm, exponentially expanding its campus. Over the next decades, Calvin swelled in population, growing to house nearly 4,200 students. It was not just a place for learning anymore, but a whole community evolving around culture, politics and social causes.
As the new millennium unfolded, Calvin embarked on several ambitious construction projects. Simultaneously, it began to make its mark on the national and international stage, gaining increasingly widespread recognition. Hinting at its growing status, the institution welcomed US President George W. Bush as the commencement speaker in 2005, albeit amidst a mixed reaction from its community.
Breaching the veil of controversies and financial difficulties, Calvin persistently strove towards growth and evolution. In another avant-garde move, the institution renamed itself as Calvin University on July 10, 2019. Aligned with the global perception of colleges being academically inferior to universities, this transition further heightened Calvin’s appeal for potential students all around the world.
However, by 2021, the institution was forced to suspend several majors and minors due to financial strains. This included the dismissal of tenured faculty members, a harsh yet necessary decision at the time. In that same year, the accomplished President Le Roy announced his departure, and his successor, Wiebe Boer was appointed as the 11th president of Calvin in March 2022.
Moving ahead, by Jul 2023, the University made the strategic move to acquire Compass College of Film and Media, a testament of its future-focused approach towards expanding its academic reach.
