Get a glimpse into the past with a riveting tale about Guilford College - a unique institution in the southeastern United States. This marks the only college in this territory which has its roots in Quaker tradition. Kickstarting its journey back in the year 1837, it originally started as New Garden Boarding School. In a matter of 51 years the institution transformed into a four-year liberal arts college in 1888, adopting its present name - Guilford College.
As you delve deeper into the history be surprised, as you find a fascinating connection with Levi Coffin. This renowned abolitionist, Quaker, and political dissident had his childhood woven into the fabric of the land belonging to Guilford. It has now donned the status of a historical site, a great place to visit for aspiring historians like you.
You may also be intrigued by the atmospheric woods of New Garden. These woods are not just an aesthetically appealing campus feature. They are an echo from the past, pockmarked with tales of valour and hidden routes. Back in the 19th century, run by Coffin, they served as a crucial meeting point for the Underground Railroad.
Fast forward a century or so and meet Jane Fernandes, a dedicated individual who held the president's office from 2014. Her leadership was tested during the COVID-19 pandemic when she had to lay off and furlough colleagues. She decided to step down on June 30, 2020, announcing her planned sabbatical and her transition to a tenured faculty position in English.
Following this decision, Carol Moore stepped in as the interim president. She introduced a "program prioritization", an ambitious project to prune and condense the bouquet of majors. Once approved, this would considerably curtail the number of offered majors. The college shared in November 2020, its plan to discontinue 19 out of its 42 majors and cut down 16 tenured professors.
This plan, however, sparked a protest amongst the faculty. In an unprecedented move in the college's history, they voted no confidence in Moore and the Board of Trustees' leadership in November 2020. Consequently, Moore left the college, and Jim Hood, an experienced faculty member, was elected to be the new interim president by end of February 2021.
But, not everything was gloomy in 2021. The college decided to halt the layoff plans that were announced earlier in November 2020. This not only released a breath of relief among staffers but also gave a much-needed push to significant fundraising efforts. Such plans were put on ice till the Spring semester, to shift focus towards strengthening the financial backbone through fundraising.
This swift strategic planning bore fruit. Already by late March 2021, the fundraising initiative had gathered momentum and was performing slightly better than expected. But the best was yet to come. The cherry on top was when Kyle Farmbry entered the fray, becoming Guilford's 10th president on January 1, 2022.
The narrative of Guilford College is an amalgamation of resilience, adaptability, and tradition. It's a tale that could inspire any aspiring college-goer such as yourself, and a lesson, in the dynamic influence of history on educational institutions.
