Once upon a time, in the heart of Edgefield, South Carolina, a spark ignited which would soon grow into the educational powerhouse known as Furman University. It was December of 1825 when the South Carolina Baptist Convention sowed the seeds of Furman Academy and Theological Institution. These humble beginnings, on a chilly January morning in 1827 (or was it 1828? Records differ), marked the inception of an academic journey that would traverse through centuries and inspire thousands.
During its early years, the institution was a struggling sapling with an average of just ten students. Financial stability was a distant dream, but determined minds often thrive on the brink of adversity. The 1830s saw Furman zigzag its way across South Carolina, finally resting in Fairfield County at the behest of Reverend Jonathan Davis, a member of the school's board.
Furman's leap from a struggling academy into the world of universities came in 1850 with an official charter from the state legislature. One year later, the lure of Greenville led to relocation, thanks to the funds generously assembled by the South Carolina Baptists. However, the university was forced into hibernation from 1861 to 1866 due to the Civil War, as students and faculty joined the Confederate forces.
Post-war, Furman returned stronger to Greenville. An engaging testament to its early history can still be seen in the Furman Institution Faculty Residence. The first university building was relocated from downtown Greenville to the present day campus, standing as a quiet memorial of Furman's evolution.
The 1930s brought a fresh breeze of change as Furman began sharing classrooms with Greenville Women's College. Soon after, the two institutions united under the banner of Furman University. 1924 saw the university become a beneficiary of the Duke Endowment, receiving a staggering $110 million till 2007, making it one of the nation's largest philanthropic distributions.
As the winds of desegregation started blowing around 1954, Furman still stood rigid resisting integration. But by 1963, rising pressure from faculty and students led to desegregation. However, the journey was not smooth with the Baptist Convention overturning the decision until it was made a condition by Furman's then-new president, Gordon W. Blackwell, in 1965. Kudos to the brave Joe Vaughn, the first African American undergraduate to enroll at Furman.
A significant shift transpired in 1992 when the South Carolina Baptist Convention ended their affiliation with Furman University. Despite this, the university thrived, receiving an astounding $400 million between 2004 and 2013 as part of the Because Furman Matters campaign, 62% of which boosted the endowment fund. During this time, Si Gordan Herring and David Trone among many others made significant contributions to Furman's expansion and development.
Drawing a curtain over their controversial past, a task force in October 2018 acknowledged Furman University's connection to slavery and racism. This group went on to implement 19 recommendations to honour and remember the hardships endured by the African American community on this campus. Today, Furman University is an amalgamation of outstanding academics, a deep-rooted historical legacy, and an embracing culture, appealing to students from all walks of life.
