Imagine it's 1843. A team of eleven zealous Congregational ministers who had been trained at the Andover Theological Seminary decides to travel into the uncharted frontier. Each of these brave men have a vision; to start a church and co-establish a college. Here begins the journey of what we now know as the Grinnell College.
Ironically, by the time these ministers set foot on Iowan soil, they each opted for a different town to establish their congregation. Soon, in 1846, their shared dream saw the light of day when they went on to collectively establish the Iowa College in Davenport, a city in Eastern Iowa. And shortly after the inception of the college, Iowa became a part of the Union.
The initial 25 years of the college was a period of identity crisis. They had to endure conflicts with the Davenport city council due to their stance against slavery and saloons. Interestingly, the move out of Davenport took them more into the frontier, to the town of Grinnell. It was named after Josiah Bushnell Grinnell, a founder and an influential abolitionist minister. Now, Grinnell had an interesting claim to fame. Apparently, journalist Horace Greeley had written to him saying, "Go West, young man, go West." However, Greeley continues to deny any such interaction.
Despite retaining its official name as "The Trustees of Iowa College," the college took an affection to its new home, Grinnell. And finally, in 1909, the trustees officially adopted Grinnell in the institution's name. These were not easy times, though. There were several setbacks, one being the American Civil War that saw a sharp dip in student and faculty numbers.
However, things began to look bright once again in the period following the war. Women were given an official status as degree candidates and the curriculum was expanded to include new fields, like natural sciences with lab work. Disaster struck again in 1882 when a tornado, or as it was called then, a cyclone, hit Grinnell College. Not one, but both the college buildings were collapsed. This incident gave the college its yearbook's name – 'The Cyclone.' They rebuilt, though, not just their campus and buildings, but also their curriculum. It was expanded to include Political Science and modern languages.
Grinnell College soon became the epicenter of the Social Gospel reform movement led by Professor George D. Herron and President George A. Gates. In a lighter vein, the college was also the site of the first intercollegiate football and baseball games played west of the Mississippi. And joyfully, the home teams emerged victorious.
As we entered the 20th century, Grinnell College was a vibrant place. It started a Phi Beta Kappa chapter, developed a departmental "major" system of study, began the Grinnell-in-China initiative, and developed a women's residence hall system that became a blueprint for many others. Several Grinnell graduates went on to play critical roles during Franklin D. Roosevelt's presidency.
Grinnell continuously focused on social issues, educational innovation, and individual expression. Even before the Peace Corps was established, the college had already started a "5th-year travel-service program." Other innovations included first-year tutorials, cooperative pre-professional programs, and programs in quantitative studies and the societal impacts of technology. To foster innovation, the college awards the $100,000 Grinnell College Innovator for Social Justice Prize every year.
Jumping ahead to 1975, Grinnell College, showed a progressive business move. Through their Grinnell Communications subsidiary, they purchased an NBC affiliate WLWD for about $13 million. After a short stint being an ABC affiliate, the station was eventually sold off to Hearst Broadcasting for $45–$48 million.
Fast Forward to 2022, Grinnell College scripted history yet again to become the very first fully unionized undergraduate school in the U.S. This was after its student workers voted to expand their dining hall workers union to include all student workers, a move wholeheartedly supported by their college president. This intricate journey, filled with both highs and lows, is an inspiration for all those who believe in the power of dreams and the strength of determination.
