Once upon a time, around the dawn of the 20th century, an investment banker named Frances Bond owned a scenic expanse of land known as Willowbrook Farm. This wasn't just any farm. It was adorned with a magnificent Gregorian mansion, beautiful formal gardens, and remarkable outbuildings. And the creative mind behind these architectural marvels? It was none other than Horace Trumbauer, the same genius who designed the iconic Philadelphia Museum of Art.
The mansion, incredible in its beauty and standing tall for over a hundred years, served as the residential haven for the Bond family. Today, in honoring its rich past, the mansion continues to be in use as Assumption Hall within the university campus.
Among the members of Bond's family was his son, James Bond, an ornithologist of great repute. James lived here and it was his work that serendipitously became connected to the world of literature. When author Ian Fleming needed a name for the hero of his next novel, he borrowed it from a bird-watching book James had written, titled ‘Birds of the West Indies.’ As a result, a worldwide literary phenomenon was named after the inhabitant of the idyllic Willowbrook Farm.
Unfortunately, joy followed by sorrow is a common theme of life. A few years after the completion of their Gregorian Mansion, Frances Bond's beloved wife Margaret passed away in 1910. Two years later, the grieving husband sold the impressive Willowbrook Farm to a couple named Roland and Anita Taylor.
The Taylors renamed their new acquisition Treweryn, inspired by the creek flowing through the property. Roland Taylor, being a gardening enthusiast, planted a broad range of ornamental trees and shrubs on the premise, including 53 varieties of Rhododendron, adding to the charm of Treweryn.
The circle of life continued, and the Taylors passed away in due course. Their daughters, left with the responsibly of the magnificent Treweryn estate, took a decision that etched its name in history. In 1948, they sold the Gregorian mansion, outbuildings, and additional land to the Sisters of Mercy.
And that's how, dear students, in a nutshell, Gwynedd Mercy University was born, on the foundations of Willowbrook Farm and Treweryn, each playing a significant role in its inception. The history of this wonderful institution is grounded in resilience, passion, and a dash of literary coincidence. A saga that mirrors the journey you are about to embark on as students of this globally recognized university.
