Imagine, back in the days of 1867, your journey starts with a place known as the Centenary Collegiate Institute (CCI). At that time, the Methodist Episcopal Church had the honour of founding this humble learning place. The name "Centenary" was chosen with a deep purpose, to remember the 100 years of Methodism's journey in the United States. The institute came up with an investment of $200,000, under the leadership of George H. Whitney, D.D. He held the reins from 1869 to 1895.
CCI's journey was one of evolution and the endeavour to provide every student a place of learning. Inception of CCI saw students of both genders sharing benches, but by 1910, it became a girls-only institution. Fast forward to 1940, and it ramped up to Centenary Junior College, targeted more towards female learners.
In the changing winds of 1956, the junior college ascended to Centenary College for Women. With this, it was offering four-year courses in various disciplines to women. Men were able to join, but with a catch—they could only pursue degrees in night classes. However, by 1988, the college lifted this barrier, allowing full-time education for men.
Alongside, the educational institute didn’t limit itself to bachelor's degrees only. In 1995, it introduced master's degrees to its repertoire. Eventually, in 2016, the New Jersey Secretary of Higher Education upgraded the Centenary College to University status, solidifying its academic stature.
The university's history isn’t only about academic progression. It witnessed a chilling event in 1886. A student worker, Tillie Smith (aged 19), faced a tragic murder. The convict was a janitor of the university, James Titus, who was found guilty based on circumstantial evidence stirred by yellow journalism. The case's details and the conviction continually ignite debates, reinforced through ghost tours, theatrical pieces, books, and articles in "Weird NJ" magazine.
In 1899, on a Halloween night, the devastating flames of a fire took away the old CCI building. With everything turned into ashes, the institute rose again in 1901 with the construction of Old Main on the ruins (currently known as Seay Building). The newly built edifice showed a remarkable Renaissance Beaux Arts style crafted by architect Oscar Schutte Teale. Only the men’s gymnasium (Little Theatre) and women’s gymnasium (Ferry Building) survived the tragic incident.
Fast forward a few decades to 1957, and you'd find Centenary making strides in media, establishing a student-run FM college radio station, WNTI. Over time, WNTI reached the broader regional community and became affiliated with NPR, airing an adult album rock format. However, in 2015, the University of Pennsylvania-based WXPN acquired the FM transmitter. Despite that, as of 2020, Centenary turned a new media leaf by operating a student-run internet radio station at WNTI.org.
