History Colgate University

In the early 19th century, specifically 1817, a group of thirteen brave men took entrepreneurship by the horns and laid the foundation for one such institution. This group comprised of both clergy and laymen, established the Baptist Education Society of the State of New York. Two years rolled by and the school had its charter granted by the state. The doors of this great institution swung open for learning in 1820, nestled comfortably in the town of Hamilton.

For the roots to grow deeper, they needed to team up with like-minded organizations. The Baptist Theological Seminary at New York City fit the bill perfectly. In 1823, they merged with the Baptist Education Society and a fresh name donned the board - Hamilton Literary & Theological Institution. One notable trustee to join the team was none other than William Colgate, the man who started the renowned Colgate Company.

In 1826, the visionary trustees foresaw the potential in a plot of farmland, which they acquired. This marked the beginning of a shift- the campus was moving towards this land, now famously known as "The Hill". Just a year later, students and faculty united to build the West Hall, using stones from a quarry existing within the plot.

By 1846, the institution's progress was so remarkable that the State of New York had to acknowledge it. The school was extended the privilege of a college charter. The fraternity extended even further when, at the request of the Hamilton trustees, degrees were awarded by Columbian College in Washington, D.C. (now known as George Washington University) to forty-five Bachelor's students and a Master's candidate of Hamilton’s Collegiate Department. It was during this period, that the institute decided to recognize itself as Madison University.

A rich tapestry of history ahead, entailed a change in the university’s name to Colgate University in 1890. This was to honour the Colgate family for their significant contributions to the school, most notably, a $1 million endowment by James B. Colgate, one of William Colgate's sons.

In its early days, Colgate University was exclusive to male students. But as early as the mid-1800s, the doors began to crack open for women, with Emily Taylor, daughter of then-president Stephen W. Taylor, attending her father's moral philosophy class. Over the years, female participation in courses increased and the university officially became fully coeducational in 1970.

As we fast forward to today, we spot the liberal, forward-thinking approach Colgate is famous for. In the year 2022, the university announced that students hailing from families with an income less than $80,000 will be allowed to study tuition-free. For families making between $80,000 and $150,000, the cost will range between 5% and 10% of the family income. Moreover, those with an income of more than $150,000 will receive 100% of their demonstrated need.

Despite the historical controversies surrounding some leaders at Colgate, the university continues to grow and evolve. Even with the shadows cast by the anti-immigration sentiment of Colgate's eighth President, George Barton Cutten, the university has managed to navigate through the difficulties, testament to this is their step towards removing Cutten's name from a residential complex in 2017.

With a history as deep and rich as Colgate's, it stands as a beacon of perseverance and progress. Cultural diversity, inclusive education, and a spirit of constant evolution make Colgate University more than just an institution; it is a formidable force shaping the leaders and visionaries of tomorrow.
