Rooted in the throes of the American Civil War back in 1861, Hampton University emerged from "Little Scotland", a former plantation in Elizabeth City County, beauty overlooking the Hampton River. Its history is intertwined with scenes of struggle, hope and a burning desire for freedom and knowledge. Amid the daunting backdrop of the war, the American Missionary Association (AMA) seized the initiative to respond to the substantial educational needs of the former slaves. Courageously, Mary Smith Peake, an avant-garde educator who had been clandestinely teaching, despite the state's prohibition, took on the mantle as the first teacher at the AMA camp.
Picture it: a group of eager students under a grand oak, soaking in the lessons from Mary Smith Peake. This iconic oak, under which the Emancipation Proclamation was first read in 1863, is celebrated as the Emancipation Oak, a treasured symbol of freedom at Hampton University.
In 1868, post-war, the Hampton Agricultural and Industrial School was established, later to be known as the Hampton Institute. Led by trailblazers of the American Missionary Association and former Union General Samuel Chapman Armstrong, Hampton was at the forefront of integrated education. Among its illustrious alumni was renowned educator, Dr. Booker T. Washington, who was the first principal of the Tuskegee Institute.
Hampton's legacy also finds its roots embedded in the Civil War era Fortress Monroe. This Union-held fortress turned sanctuary for refugee slaves was the origin of the Grand Contraband Camp – a beacon of freedom and safety for escaped slaves who sought refuge behind Union lines.
The resilient story continues with Mary S. Peake. She pioneered outdoor classes for freedmen in 1861, a tradition that perseveres under the landmark Emancipation Oak today. Peake's legacy was honored when the school, chartered in 1870 on a former plantation named – you guessed it – "Little Scotland", became known as the Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute.
In the midst of rebuilding post-Civil War, Hampton received significant financial support from the American Missionary Association, other church organizations, and particularly generous contributions from former Union Army officers and soldiers. One key supporter was General William Jackson Palmer, a decorated Union cavalry commander, who played an integral part in Hampton's early development.
From its humble beginnings under an oak, Hampton University amassed vast admissions, with almost a thousand students in just a decade – majority of whom became teachers themselves, reflecting the potent ethos of Hampton. The visionaries at Hampton actuated a successful external relations program that culminated in the institution becoming one of the wealthiest, serving African Americans, by 1900.
Pushing the boundaries of conventional education, Hampton established the first library school for African American librarians in the US. Launched in 1925, the Hampton Institute Library School issued professional degrees to 183 black librarians before it concluded its operations in 1939.
Hampton's tale of strength and resilience is incomplete without mentioning Booker T. Washington who, starting as a student, went on to become a teacher at Hampton and eventually bolstered Tuskegee into a recognized normal school. His transformative journey from student to educator underlines the pivotal role Hampton has played in empowering countless individuals.
Closing the chapter of this historical narrative, Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute transformed into Hampton University in 1984 and continues to be a hub of inspiring change and dedicated learning as promised by its roots dating back to 1861. The Emancipation Oak, therefore, stands not only as a historic landmark but as an enduring symbol of the perseverance, determination and empowerment that Hampton University embodies.
