History College of the Atlantic

Can you believe it all began on an enchanting island, Mount Desert Island, to be precise? This is where the seeds of College of the Atlantic sprouted from, envisioned by residents who desired to stimulate their island's economy when the wave of tourism began waning in the off-season. They dreamt of creating a year-round, four-year higher education institution, and their dreams finally took concrete shape in late 1960s.

No ordinary folks these dreamers were. Among them were Father James Gower, a man of peace and a Catholic priest, and his former ally on the football field from Bar Harbor High School, entrepreneur Les Brewer. Picture them conjuring up the vision for the College of the Atlantic in 1968, finally realizing it in 1969. That was when the School of Human Ecology got the temporary stamp of approval from the Maine State Board of Education on June 23, 1969.

Can you imagine the thrill they must have felt? Yes, and they weren't alone. Bernard K. "Sonny" Cough, Richard Lewis, and Robert Smith - three more pioneering souls from Mount Desert Island came along, joining hands to establish the college. Edward Kaelber, a man of exceptional pedigree being an assistant dean at Harvard Graduate School of Education, became the college's first president. He was soon joined by the capable Melville P. Cote in 1970, who took on the twin roles of Assistant to the President and Director of Admissions and Student Affairs.

And here's an interesting tidbit. Father Gower had a vivid imagination. He wanted to call the institution 'Acadia Peace College'. However, 'College of the Atlantic' won the favored vote. The college flung open its doors to its first students in 1972, a modest group of 32. But, can you believe it? By the 2012-13 academic year, the student body had swelled to 300!

The College of the Atlantic is a rarity. It offers only one academic major: human ecology. Doesn't that sound unique? Well, guess who helped in creating this unique curriculum? It was none other than Gower himself! He played a significant role in sculpting the distinctive academic programs of the college.

Now, this is the part you'll find hard to believe. The majority of the college campus was bought for a mere dollar! Yes, just $1 from the Oblate Fathers of Mary Immaculate Seminary, who used to call the site their monastery. Co-founder Bernard Cough's family, too, was generous enough to donate parts of the campus.

So, that's the remarkable tale of College of the Atlantic. An island dream conceived by innovative minds, brought to life by dedicated educators, and sustained by the passionate study of human ecology. How about that for a college history worth sharing!
