History Dartmouth College

Born out of a strong desire to train Native Americans as Christian missionaries, Dartmouth College traces its roots back to a devoted Yale graduate named Eleazar Wheelock. Back in Connecticut, Wheelcock was moved to establish an educational institution by his close bond with the Mohegan Indian Samson Occom, who studied under Wheelock from 1743 to 1747. Occom utilized his theology knowledge to preach in Long Island, and his passion inspired Wheelock to fund Dartmouth College, one of the nine colonial colleges created before the American Revolution.

In 1755, Wheelock started Moor's Indian Charity School with high hopes, but soon realized that he required more funding to keep the school afloat. His plea for help echoed across the Atlantic, reaching John Phillips who laid the foundation stone with his first significant donation in 1762. Phillips is also renowned for inaugurating the prestigious Phillips Exeter Academy, hence creating a fledgling educational revolution in itself.

With finances secured, Wheelock embarked on a journey further north, relocating the school to a place more accessible to the tribal territories. Hence, Dartmouth found its new home in Hanover, thanks to a fruitful collaboration with New Hampshire's Royal Governor, John Wentworth. The arduous task of relocation and securing necessary resources were crowned with a royal charter issued in 1769. Dartmouth was committed to educating the youth of the land and stood as the last beacon of higher learning established under Colonial rule, granting its first degrees in 1771.

However, original intentions to educate Native Americans were somewhat compromised, and the college became an institution primarily for white students. Despite this shift, Dartmouth broke barriers by educating its first African-American students in 1775 and 1808, gaining recognition as an institution open to all. Dartmouth's inclusivity didn't just end there. In 1972, the college opened its doors to women, bolstering its reputation as a progressive educational institution.

The college housed not just educational revolutions, but also contributed greatly to technologies that would shape the world. In 1956, the Dartmouth workshop laid the groundwork for the emergence of artificial intelligence. Dartmouth's reach in educational innovation extended beyond its walls and the college played a pivotal role in founding the University of New Hampshire in 1891.

Despite seeing academic ups and downs, Dartmouth has always bounced back stronger. Massive fundraising campaigns in the 21st century enabled campus renovation, the construction of new housing complexes, and marked the expansion of the college infrastructure. This transition gained Dartmouth recognition as a model of institutional endurance.

Dartmouth's rich history is filled with key figures that have carried forward Wheelock's vision. After a history of dedicated leaders, as of today, Dartmouth College is headed by Sian Leah Beilock, who took office in June 2023. Moreover, Dartmouth has used its rich experience in education to form partnerships with other leading global institutions, as it did in May 2010 when joining the Matariki Network of Universities.

The college's history is also filled with amends and steps taken towards righting historic wrongs. In a symbolic gesture, the papers of Samson Occum were returned to the Mohegan Tribe in April 2022, and a substantial $42 million renovation led to the rededication of Dartmouth Hall in November 2022. Dartmouth's alumni played an instrumental role in this renovation, marking the golden jubilee year of coeducation at the college.

In 2019, Dartmouth College acknowledged and compensated students subjected to alleged sexual harassment, affirming its commitment to a safe and secure learning environment. Despite all its trials, Dartmouth College stands tall, being elected to the Association of American Universities (AAU), and shining as a premier institution filling bright young minds with knowledge, preparing them for a better tomorrow. So, as you are at the cusp of choosing your path to higher education, maybe Dartmouth's remarkable journey will inspire you to be a part of its progressive history.
