A story began unfolding in 1883 when the first bishop of Helena, John Baptist Brondel, dreamt of establishing a Catholic college in Montana. Despite his sad departure from this world before seeing his vision come true, Brondel's dream didn't end with him. Instead, it was carried forward by his successor, a dynamic young priest from Dubuque, Iowa, John Patrick Carroll, selected by none other than Pope Pius X.
Carroll, who later became the second Bishop of the Diocese of Helena, undertook an extraordinary journey. He managed to secure the college's funding and, concurrently, raise capital for the Cathedral of St. Helena's construction, demonstrating a fine example of his dedication and leadership. In 1909, this intricate web of dreams and dedications intersected with the life of William Howard Taft, 27th President of the United States, who laid the cornerstone of St. Charles Hall at the college.
The college took its first step on September 27, 1909, thanks to Bishop John Patrick Carroll. Initially named Mount St. Charles College, an honorarium for St. Charles Borromeo, it was envisioned as an all-men's liberal arts college. The objectives were simple yet ambitious - to prepare young men for various vocations including the priesthood, law, medicine, teaching, and engineering. Taft, during the cornerstone laying ceremony, emphasized, "The college... will be a blessing to Helena and the entire state of Montana. The United States needs more institutions of this nature."
In September 1910, the first classes at Mount Saint Charles College began its academic journey that would march forward to change many lives. The first student graduated in 1916, and 16 years later, in 1932, the college was renamed Carroll College to honor its founder.
In 1935, a massive earthquake shook Helena. It is fascinating to learn that Carroll College survived with minor damage while many other buildings and schools were severely affected. An approximate damage worth half a million dollars was recorded. The fallen stones from the college building were repurposed to establish a campus observatory, later known as Neuman Observatory, after a renowned chemistry professor, Edward Neuman. This observatory holds the record of being the oldest astronomical observatory in Montana.
World War II marked another significant phase for the institution. Carroll college was one of the 131 colleges across the nation participating in the V-12 Navy College Training Program, providing a path to a Navy commission for the students. Post-war, Carroll College began mineralizing under the GI Bill, and many military veterans enrolled for various programs.
Soon, the walls of the college reverberated with feminine voices as it began admitting female students, breaking a tradition and marking a significant milestone. The transformation was profound and stemmed from the revisions brought in by the Second Vatican Council.
By 1989, Carroll had to face another calamity - an infamous train wreck. It caused significant damage to Carroll, primarily to Guadalupe Hall, the women's dormitory. However, Carroll College stood the test of time, evolving and growing through the years, and continues its journey of knowledge and wisdom.
