In the mid-19th century, a group of enlightened people belonging to the Free Will Baptist sect started their collegiate journey. It was 1844, and their first step was to establish Michigan Central College in the quaint town of Spring Arbor, Michigan. Can you imagine? This institution, their first, was quickly incorporated by the state in 1845, starting academic courses with 25 undergraduates. This was a college without religious boundaries, with its first president being Daniel McBride Graham, who guided the establishment from 1844 till 1848.
Edmund Burke Fairfield, an inspiring figure, took the charge in 1848. Only two years later, the college got the green light to confer degrees. What's more, they pioneered inclusiveness in education - it was the second college in the nation to grant four-year liberal arts degrees to women and admitted black students right from the start.
With time, the college was thriving and quickly grew outsize for its initial campus. So, they decided to move to Hillsdale, Michigan in 1853. The railroad serving the city, among other factors, influenced this decision. Now, picture this. Hillsdale was just 20 years old then, and the college initiated its glorious journey here. After years of struggle and construction, the institution finally reopened as Hillsdale College in 1855.
Let me amuse you with an interesting fact here. From 1848 to 1869, Fairfield had a crucial role in Hillsdale. He attended the first convention of the brand-new Republican Party in 1854. His stint in politics didn't stop there, as he was elected the lieutenant governor of Michigan. The college welcomed famous speakers on the campus due to its early anti-slavery reputation.
Around the early 1860s, Hillsdale College was constantly in a state of flux. But it marked key milestones. In 1860, the college proudly conferred its first degrees. Then, shortly after, in 1863, they were formally recognized as a body by the Michigan legislature. Despite no longer having any denominational affiliations, they held on to the moral tenets of Christianity.
In a patriotic spirit during 1861, a large number of Hillsdale students added might to the Union Army during the American Civil War. The interesting thing to note about their contribution was the higher percentage of students who enlisted from Hillsdale compared to any other Michigan college. These were truly testing times.
Then arrived the 1870s. Hillsdale's first president, the revered Daniel McBride Graham, made a comeback. His brief second term was notable for the reconstruction of the campus after the devastating "Great Fire" in 1874.
Moving forward to the early 1900s, it was a crucial period for the college. They initiated major institutional growth and professionalization. This era also saw Joseph William Mauck, first Hillsdale graduate, taking up the president's role. Hillsdale, at the turn of the 20th century, experienced significant growth.
From the early 20th century to present, Hillsdale College faced numerous challenges and saw many visionary leaders. They successfully navigated the tumultuous years of the Great Depression, resisted federal civil rights regulations, received recognition as a Michigan Historic Site, and more recently, established a K-12 initiative. Today, schools across 19 states follow Hillsdale's K-12 liberal arts curriculum.
Unquestionably, Hillsdale College's rich history reflects its commitment to creating an inclusive academic environment with exceptional educational offerings, fostering a spirit of intellectual curiosity, and impacting countless lives over the years.
