Picture the year 1841. Just imagine a small group of men, laying the groundwork for what would eventually become the reputable Samford University. This journey began in Marion, Alabama — far removed from the hustle and bustle that would come later. Essentially, those men were guided by the legacy of a generous English philanthropist, John Howard. Built on land gifted by the Reverend James H. DeVotie, the university was initially established as Howard College. This humble initiative also had Julia Tarrant Barron at its heart, who made the initial financial contribution and donated land alongside her son.
Indeed, the road wasn’t smooth for starting Howard College. The university ignited its academic journey with nine students in 1842, with classical subjects like literature, language, and sciences. Notably, their commencement addresses caught the attention of several luminaries, including esteemed personas like Thomas G. Keen and Samuel Sterling Sherman. However, fate dealt a cruel blow in 1854 when an unfortunate fire consumed all of the college’s property, followed by the onset of the Civil War.
During these turbulent times, the institution, resilient as ever, adapted to circumstances, shifting from an academic bastion to a military hospital. Notably, they continued to provide rudimentary instruction to the recuperating soldiers. But it wasn’t until 1865, under the prudent leadership of Jabez Lamar Monroe Curry, a former military officer and then university president, the college reopened and embarked on a broader educational expansion.
Howard College's history took an exciting turn in 1887, when the trustees decided to relocate to Birmingham, Alabama, thanks to generous aid and real estate provision from the city. The remaining faculty in Marion transformed the old campus into the Marion Military Institute (MMI), which is still operational today. Further evolution followed, and by 1913, the college became permanently coeducational and introduced new academic branches like music, education, and journalism.
Fast forward to the aftermath of World War II. Just picture the surge of war veterans harnessing the benefits of the GI Bill to pursue education at the university, causing an influx that surpassed its capacity. As a resilient response, the institution expanded its horizons again, shifting to Shades Valley in Homewood, Alabama, where it stands today. By 1957, the campus was open for learning, boasting of facilities like a men's law school acquired in 1961 and a spanking new business school by 1965.
As it rose to university status in 1965, Howard college faced a minor hiccup as their preferred name, "Howard University," was already in use. Unfazed, they chose to go with "Samford University" to pay homage to Frank Park Samford, a school trustee. Later, in 1973, they added the Ida V. Moffett School of Nursing to their academic repertoire.
Take a moment and transport yourselves to 1984 when Samford University opened its study center in England. This center not only offered a golden opportunity for students to broaden their horizons by studying abroad but also heralded the institution's commitment to progressive methods of education. However, a tragic event shook the university in 1989, when professor William Lee Slagle was involved in a fatal stabbing incident.
Fast forward to 2023, and despite several challenges to its principles and ideals, the university continues to ensure an inclusive environment for all its students, including supporting groups like Samford Prism and SAFE Samford for LGBTQ+ students’ welfare. At the same time, they are proud of their heritage, honoring it with tributes like a memorial for African Americans who have significantly contributed to the institution's mission.
As you can see, the journey of Samford University has been a tapestry of events, filled with resilience and progress. It evolved from a men's college to a coeducational institution braving fires, wars, scandals, and societal evolution. Today, bolstered by a generous $100 million gift - the most massive donation ever recorded in Alabama's higher-education history – Samford remains committed to providing exceptional education, enriched by a legacy of growth, inclusivity, and progress.
