Imagine it's the year 1965. Honolulu, the vibrant heart of Hawaii, is longing for a private liberal arts college, its people yearning for quality education. Four visionary citizens - Paul C.T. Loo, Eureka Forbes, Elizabeth W. Kellerman, and Reverend Edmond Walker, heed this call for change. They plan, they work, they dream - and on the 17th of September, Hawaii Pacific College proudly opens its doors.
A year passes - 1966, a time of merging and growth as the established Honolulu Christian College becomes an inseparable part of Hawaii Pacific College. This addition fuels ideas and amplifies ambitions. Over this period of exciting transformation, James L. Meader, the College's first president, works tirelessly to craft a comprehensive and impactful educational program.
The baton of leadership is passed to the second president, George A. Warmer, when Meader retires in 1968. Stepping into the role, Warmer introduces academic programs in the liberal arts and cooperative education, enriching the college’s curriculum substantially.
Come 1972, Hawaii Pacific College produces its first batch of successful graduates. This year is also marked by the establishment of the School of Business Administration under the guidance of its founding dean, Chatt. G. Wright. Next year, 1973, brings full accreditation from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, a huge milestone in the College's journey.
Progressing swiftly, the College introduces the English Foundations Program to aid non-native English speakers and sets up the Division of Special Programs for off-campus instruction on military installations in O’ahu. Wright takes over as the third President of Hawaii Pacific College in 1976 after Warmer's retirement and continues steering the college on its growth trajectory well into the 1980s.
Throughout this period, the College continues to upgrade its academic menu, launching a Master of Business Administration program in 1986, a Master of Science in Information Systems program in 1989, and a Master of Arts in Human Resource Management in 1991. Then, in 1990, comes a significant moment - the College takes a monumental leap and transforms into Hawaii Pacific University (HPU).
In 1992, Hawaii Pacific University merges with Hawaii Loa College, a small independent liberal arts college. This consolidation expands the presence of HPU, further asserting its role in shaping higher education in the island state.
Cut to 2004. The HPU International Vocal Ensemble takes the stage at the iconic Carnegie Hall, performing Morten Lauridsen’s Lux Aeterna and O Magnum Mysterium to a mesmerised audience.
Come 2011, and it’s time for change again. Geoffrey Bannister steps into the role of the fourth president of HPU as President Wright retires. Under Bannister’s leadership, in January 2013, the Aloha Tower Marketplace becomes part of HPU, paving the way for its transformation into a mixed-use property featuring student housing, retail outlets, dining businesses, and community spaces.
Progressing further, in 2014, HPU merges with the Oceanic Institute, a crucial step that boosts university's maritime studies. Then, HPU hosts a traditional Hawaiian blessing at the Aloha Tower Marketplace, marking the official start of its highly-anticipated rejuvenation.
Fulfilling the promise of a revitalised space, in August 2015, the $50 million Aloha Tower Marketplace opens as the crown jewel of HPU’s downtown campus. Serving as an impressive educational centre replete with student housing and retail units, it stands as a tribute to university's progress.
In July 1, 2016, the reins of HPU are passed to its fifth president, John Yukio Gotanda, a native Hawaiian. Ever since, the university continues its legacy of providing quality, transformative education under Gotanda's leadership. Just like that, what started in 1965, continues to change lives and shape futures, one student at a time.
