The dramatic tale of Rice University started with the intriguing demise of its founder, William Marsh Rice, a prosperous businessman from Massachusetts. It's not every day you hear of a university's inception grounded in mystery and intrigue. In the late 1800s, Rice had amassed a fortune through real estate, railroad development, and cotton trading in Texas. In 1891, he outlined a philanthropic mission to establish a free-tuition educational institute, named after him, in Houston. But, alas, this vision was not to unfold smoothly.
In a turn of events thick with suspense, Rice was found lifeless by his personal helper, Charles F. Jones, in 1900. A sizeable cheque written to Rice's lawyer in New York raised eyebrows due to a spelling error in the recipient's name. Then, the lawyer, Albert T. Patrick, declared that Rice had conveniently left a significant sum of his fortune to him, contradicting the entrepreneur's intent to fund his educational institute. The riveting tale was heightened when an investigation, led by the District Attorney of New York, resulted in the arrests of both Patrick and Jones. They were accused of fiddling around with Rice's will and even orchestrating his untimely demise.
However, turning the tide was Rice's friend, Captain James A. Baker, whose tireless efforts maximumly resulted in the exposure of a fabricated will. Though Jones was absolved due to cooperation with the district attorney, Patrick was convicted of both conspiracy and murder in 1901. Later, he was pardoned due to conflicting medical evidence. Baker played an instrumental role in utilizing Rice's assets, worth a whopping $4.6 million (equivalent to $150 million today) in 1904, to bring Rice Institute (now Rice University) to fruition.
In 1907, the dynamic leadership of Edgar Odell Lovett, the head of the Department of Mathematics and Astronomy at Princeton University, officially gave shape to the institute. Commissioned by Princeton's president, Woodrow Wilson, Lovett embarked on a worldwide educational tour, seeking inspiration for his fledgling establishment. His vision was of a high-grade university, equally devoted to investigation and instruction. He believed in maintaining high standards, regardless of enrolment numbers, impressing upon the need for distinguished teachers to participate actively in undergraduate teaching.
The institute's maiden building, the Administration Building (now Lovett Hall), was established in 1911. A year later, on the 12th anniversary of Rice's mysterious death, Rice Institute began its journey with 59 students, nostalgically remembered as the "59 immortals." The institution was unusual for its times, as it accepted both male and female students right from the start. By the end of the year, the initial batch totalled 77.
As per Rice's will and the institute's original terms, tuition was waived for the students. This might seem ideal, yet the courses were so challenging that about half the batch couldn't see it through the first term. In the early years, an intriguingly named "Virgin's Walk" was the path linking the all-boys north colleges to the center of campus. Each college would eventually become coeducational between 1973 and 1987.
Fast forward to 2021, President Leebron showed solidarity with community members and students' appeals by deciding to work on a development agreement with the City of Houston concerning the Rice Innovation District. This move was a deviation from community's proposal of a community benefits agreement.
The epic creation of Rice University is indeed a captivating tale, complete with mystery, scandal, courage, and vision. Today, Rice stands as a testament to its founder's dream and audacious testament to pursue untrammeled education for all. As the years progress, Rice University remains committed to pushing boundaries, making strides, and shaping glowing futures.
