History Texas Southern University

Picture this: It's March 7, 1927, in Houston, Texas. The city's Independent School District Board comes to a significant resolution – they decide to establish junior colleges for both races, an enormous step in an era when all public facilities in the state were rigidly segregated. In the aftermath of this resolution, two fraternal schools are born: the Houston Junior College, which eventually matures into the University of Texas, and the Houston Colored Junior College.

The Houston Colored Junior College initially opens its classrooms at Jack Yates High School during the evenings. In 1934 its name is revamped, becoming the Houston College for Negroes. But the narrative of this infant institution doesn't halt there. It's just the beginning of an extraordinary journey.

Fast forward to February 1946. An African American man named Heman Marion Sweatt draws all eyeballs when he applies to the University of Texas School of Law. His application is rebuffed on racial grounds leading Sweatt to file a potent lawsuit, Sweatt v. Painter (1950). Unsettlingly, no law school in Texas was open to African Americans. To bypass integrating the University of Texas Law School, Texas' officialdom offers Sweatt a sweet deal - they propose setting up the Texas State University for Negroes, law school included. Some black leaders perceive this as a beam of light while others express their skepticism. Suspicion swirls around that the scheme is mere a plot to thwart the much-needed integration of the University of Texas and other white institutions. In this tussle, Sweatt is denied writ of mandamus to the University of Texas. Instead, the authorities buy a six-month continuation to carve out a law school for black students.

And then, the tide crashes in. The Fiftieth Texas Legislature passes the Texas Senate Bill 140 on March 3, 1947. The legislation authorizes and finances the inception of Texas State University for Negroes, slated to be the first state university in Houston. The bedrock of this new institution is the Houston College for Negroes, which, until then, was under the purview of the Houston Independent School District (HISD). Upshifting to a site donated by Hugh Roy Cullen, the new state university is tasked with instructing students in various professions - from dentistry and pharmacy to journalism and law. The curriculum declared must be at par with courses offered at other state-backed institutions.

Despite these advancements, the disparities between facilities and the intangibles - like the geographic distance from Austin, the University of Texas School of Law, and other law students - spark discontent. The United States Supreme Court steps in, ruling that the new university doesn't satisfy the "separate but equal" provisions. In a landmark judgement, the Supreme Court decrees that African Americans should also be welcomed to the University of Texas Law School at Austin in Sweatt v. Painter (1950).

Then comes 1960. A determined bunch of Texas Southern University students organize Houston's first sit-in at the Weingarten's lunch counter at 4110 Almeda. This milestone fuels further sit-ins across the city, eventually making waves that lead to the desegregation of Houston's public services. A testament to these pioneers stands on the inaugural sit-in site which is now a U.S. Post Office.

Fast forward again to May 17, 1967, when a blip stains the university's timeline. A series of violent clashes break out on campus between students and law enforcement officers, typified by thousands of shots fired, injuries on both sides, and the deplorable death of a police officer. Nearly 500 students are arrested. The story revolves around the fact that the five students charged with conspiracy and riot incitement were cleared due to lack of evidence, and that the officer's death was an unfortunate result of the ricochet of Houston Police Department ammunition and not student gunfire.

As the narrative reaches September 12, 2019, the university's Health and Physical Education Arena sees a flurry of activity as it hosts a Democratic presidential debate, throwing TSU into the national spotlight. Early next year, the university catches national attention again when the Governor of Texas appointed board of trustees targets the university's current president and amends the bylaws, vesting the board with the power to dismiss any university employee. Following a series of allegations of fraud against an ex-assistant dean, president Austin Lane is first suspended and then dismissed. However, in February 2020, the board of trustees conceded there was no proof of Lane's wrongdoing and compensated him nearly $900,000 in his contract buyout.

Today, Texas Southern University stands as an institution with a fiery history and a future committed to providing world-class education to its students. This history, colored with controversies and triumphs, reflects the enduring tenacity of TSU in the face of adversity, making it a beacon of educational progress in
