History University of Houston

Long before the University of Houston was a glint in the eyes of its creators, they were just humble public school folks. Drafting an idea in 1927, it was educators E.E. Oberholtzer, R.D. Daniel, and John R. Bender who first breathed life into the concept of a higher education institute in Houston. Like a spark igniting a flame, this merely begat a wonderful journey.

In the early days, when the university was still fresh like a sapling, it spread its roots in the neighborhood high school. Sharing space with San Jacinto High School, classes for 232 students kicked off on March 7, 1927. Now that’s something, ain't it? Going to the same place for junior and senior schooling!

Nothing stays the same, does it? And, so our little “college sapling” outgrew its initial home. Come 1934, it was time to set up a dedicated campus. But hey, what’s life without a few hiccups? Money was tight, almost as tight as a skinny man squeezed into an XL t-shirt. But seizing an opportunity, in true Indian jugaad style, they scooped up an old country club property at a bargain. It was a bit of a fixer-upper, but one man's trash is another man's treasure, right?

Our fledgling ‘university-to-be’ got a sibling in 1939, when the locals came together to build a second campus. So now there were two campuses, standing side by side, like fresh-faced Siamese twins. The community managed to collect a whopping $200,000. It’s not chump change, let me tell you!

After jumping hoops and swimming with sharks for some time, the college finally had its moment of glory in 1945. This was the year when it was transformed into a full-fledged state university. Here’s to climbing ladders! Destiny was calling and the university was perfectly tuned into the frequency.

And then there was another twist in the tale in 1963. The university was separated from the public school system and became completely independent. There’s something so Indian about craving independence, and the universe conspires to make it happen!

Time kept on rolling, and the University of Houston was in constant motion. In 1977, an alumnus – a darling of a man named Hugh Roy Cullen – demonstrated his generous side. Forget dishing out a few hundred bucks, the chap filled the university's coffers with a colossal $11.4 million. That sort of spirit of giving back is something all of us can relate to, right?

In the following years, the University of Houston continued to shine, gaining fame and recognition. Achieving the coveted tier-one status in 2011, it's now quite the showstopper, like a Tendulkar sixer hit out of the park.

As it stands, this Houston marvel offers 108 undergraduate, 104 master's, and 52 research doctoral programs. Oh, and it brags about 45 research centres. With 74,000 students from all corners of the world studying there as we speak, it’s surely a bustling space, full of color, culture, and charm. Can you imagine the headspins it’s going to give you? But, fun ones, trust me!

Now, you know the history, the ups and downs, the twists and turns, of the University of Houston. From a sapling to a giant tree, the journey has been thrilling, to say the least! Not unlike our own Indian sagas, no? So, dear students, as you contemplate your big leap towards further studies, maybe, just maybe, the University of Houston should be on your top places to paint your dreams.
