Hang onto your hats, folks, because we're about to embark on an engaging journey through the dynamic history of the University of Houston (UH), a promising destination for international students eyeing a bright future in the far West.
Starting from scratch, the story unfolds in 1927, when representative of Houston Independent School District decided to hand out candy - not literally though. Rather, they planted the seeds for Houston Junior College, the humble predecessor of UH. For three sweet years, students pored over textbooks at night, their dreams illuminating Houston like the stars overhead.
After gaining a quick and shining popularity, by 1934, our little sapling transformed into a sturdy oak, being renamed the University of Houston. Smack on its vibrant campus, we cannot ignore the maverick Ruth Wikoff. A feisty lassie, Wikoff led the struggle against all odds to secure for UH a separate identity and tossed the association with Houston ISD into the bin.
With the dawn of 1939, the university transformed its once-quiet corners into buzzing hives of activity. UH moved, lock, stock, and barrel, to its present location, spreading its wings across a whopping 110 acres! That’s about 84 football fields put together, give or take a few goalposts.
However, it wasn't all smooth sailing, especially when the Second World War knocked on doors. The campus transformed from a place of learning to a shelter for military trainees. Amidst these troubled waters, UH still managed to stay right as rain, continuing to deliver quality education.
Once the dust of the war settled, UH proudly beamed as the first state university in Houston in 1963, tucking another feather in its hat. Since then, UH has done more flip-flops than a gymnast, constantly evolving to cater to the demands of its global student audience.
Fast forward to 1977, UH broke bread with the likes of the University of Texas and Texas A&M University, joining the proud ranks of Tier-One research universities. Now, that's the kind of company you desire, right?
When it comes to diversity, UH isn't twiddling thumbs. As of 2008, it boasts over 4000 international students representing more than 130 countries, so you know you'll fit right in. It's not a melting pot, but more of a salad bowl - each student adding a distinct flavor to the rich tapestry of campus culture.
And, as they say, the rest is history. Today, the University of Houston stands tall, a testament to resilience and the unwavering pursuit of knowledge. It's somewhere between a monument and a marvel — resonating with stories of its past, humming with the energy of the present, and eager to write a bright chapter for the future. So, here's a shoutout to all the young Indian minds, are you ready to partake in this exciting journey?
