In the quaint, serene town of Huntingdon, there emerged an institution that was soon to become a wellspring of high standards. Dr. Andrew B. Brumbaugh, a spirited, town physician, alongside his two cousins — John and Henry Brumbaugh, laid the foundations of the Huntingdon Normal School in 1876. Their enterprise started modestly, with classes held in a room above Henry's print shop and the lodging and meals for the first teacher, Jacob M. Zuck, provided by John. Dr. Andrew undertook the responsibility of furnishing students and furniture.
The first pupils to cross the threshold of this budding learning centre on April 17, 1876, were Rebecca Cornelius, Maggie D. Miller, and Gaius M. Brumbaugh. It was here that they were nurtured under the wing of their teacher, Zuck.
By 1877, shifting sands and new visions led to the rechristening of the school as Brethren Normal School. More so, Zuck began reflecting upon introducing a "Scientific Course" and issuing "Certificates of Graduation". Soon, the growing institution found a new abode in Founder’s Hall, a distinctive building on the campus that we now associate with the institution.
However, every journey comes with a hiccup. The Institute encountered a profound loss in 1879 when Jacob Zuck passed away due to pneumonia. His demise struck partly because of his insistence on residing in the under-construction Founders Hall bereft of any heating.
The mantle of leadership then passed to James Quinter, the institution's first president. His tenure was marked with growth and progression. Meanwhile, Brethren Normal School commenced a legal battle with the authorities over its name and emerged victorious in 1894, officially re-dubbed Juniata College, drawing inspirations from the nearby Juniata River.
An epoch of change took place in 1895 when Dr. Martin Grove Brumbaugh, an 1881 alumnus of Brethren Normal, grabbed the reins. His presidency extended up until 1910. He left a profound impact and continued to cherish an inseparable connection with the institute.
In between, he also served as the governor of Pennsylvania from 1915 to 1919, and as the commissioner of education in Puerto Rico in 1900. Yet, he returned to serve Juniata once again in 1924.
When Dr. Brumbaugh bid adieu to this world unexpectedly in 1930 while vacationing in Pinehurst, North Carolina, his shoes were filled by a previous student of Juniata - Dr. Charles Calvert Ellis.
This intertwined journey of famous personalities and dedicated individuals, against the backdrop of compelling history and growth, paints a vivid picture of Juniata College. The saga of Juniata reflects nurturing global citizens and leaders who, like their forebearers, are set to shape the world.
