Winding the clock back to 1879, Texas witnessed the emergence of a luminary academic institution, Sam Houston State University (SHSU), christened the Sam Houston Normal Institute, after the legendary Governor Sam Houston. Thumbs up to Austin lawmakers who green-lit the establishment of a teacher-training institution, and thus, our beloved SHSU was born.
There's a saying, "first impressions last," right? Well, SHSU made a stunner of a first impression! Picture this, it was October 10th, 1879, and 110 students strolled through its hallowed hallways for the first time, each brimming with excitement! Overseeing them were Professor H. F. Estill and his four-member faculty team. Talk about starting small and dreaming big!
Now lean in close, and listen. Our third president, Mr. Harry Estill, made quite the mark! Under his reins from 1908 to 1937, SHSU was recognized as a degree-granting institution. Can you imagine? From training teachers to doling out degrees, SHSU was on a roll!
