History Columbia College

Once upon a time, back in 1754, situated in the heart of captivating New York City, Columbia College first swung open its academic doors. Seems like a scene straight out from a movie, right? An eager, young educator named Dr Samuel Johnson, kicked things off with just 8 students. But guess what? Today, it's a buzzing hive of bright and ambitious bloke and lasses from all corners of the globe, including quite a bunch from our own lovely India.

Knock Knock! Who's the first to get the badge of honor? Don't think of Googling, we got it here for you. Back in 1758, Robert Harpur, a chummy chap with a great head on his shoulders, became the first faculty member. From then on, the college was on a roll, growing faster than a teenager's appetite.

They say "change is the only constant". So true for our dear Columbia College. You see, it didn't start as Columbia College. No sir! It was originally named King's College and later got its name-change badge in 1784, post the American Revolution. I bet even Dhruv from your history class didn't see that change coming!

Schools and colleges tend to be just like individuals, marking their significant milestones. And what was this majestic institution's milestone, you wonder? Well, in the year that gave us Coca Cola (1886, in case you were pondering), Columbia College became the first in the USA to introduce "Core Curriculum". This pioneering move stitched together a gorgeous tapestry of interdisciplinary education offering various fields of study. A smorgasbord of knowledge!

Next came, what we can call, the big era of expansion. Between 1896 and 1897, the school hosts its relocation gala to Morningside Heights, a swanky part of town. It was a pizza slice of Manhattan but oh-so-clutch to Columbia's growth story. Architecture buffs would've drooled at the sight of new Gothic-style buildings sprouting up, adding an old-world charm to the modern educational establishment.

Now, remember folks, Columbia College is no silent wallflower. It's got some serious activism under its belt. The Vietnam War in the 1960s saw Columbia students raising their voices like warriors of justice. They did sit-ins, protests, you name it! True to its core, the college encouraged this vibrant spark of youthful rebellion. Proof that Columbia raised not just scholars, but also future leaders and movers.

If the 60s was a pot of hot activism, the 80s was a hearty stew of diversity. Give a big beaming smile because the year 1983 was when Columbia College embraced co-education, giddily welcoming the first batch of brilliant women into its academic fold. "Unity in diversity" isn't just an Indian phrase, it seems!

Talking of diversity, in 1990, the college took a bold stand for our world's indigenous tribals, setting up the Center for the Study of Ethnicity and Race. This step proved that Columbia was more than just academics and a top-tier Ivy League institute. It's where humanity found space to thrive.

Believe it or not, Columbia also has a heart. No kidding! In the year 2005, the Columbia College Fund was set up which serves as a fundraising program. This initiative lends a helping hand to all wunderkinds who need financial aid. It's like a fairy godmother, ensuring no gem of a student misses their chance to shine.

This is the Columbia College. Much more than just ivy-covered walls and academia. It's been a silent witness to many histories, riding the wave of societal changes and triumphs. Who knows, maybe you can be part of its next chapter. Ready to grab the bull by the horns? Well, who wouldn't!
